All Alone

Everyone in this world had one thing in common, a small heart on the right corner of their left wrist. For a good part of their lives it is pretty useless, until it glows. When the mark illuminates it signifies that you have met your soul mate, your one and only, the person you would spend the rest of your life with. Except for me it is a little diffrent.

"Mom!" I yelled "Annie is crying again where is her blanket?" Annie is my 2 year old little sister. I live alone with her and my mom, who is barely alive ever since 6 months ago. She met her soul mate, my dad when she was 16 and they got married at 22. They had me and then 13 happy years later had Annie. 6 months ago dad died due to bone cancer. It was really hard on mom she lost her one and only, her life was basically over. Once you lose yours soul mate you loose a piece of you. "Its right here." She said breathlessly. I take the blanket and give it to Annie and on cue she stops crying. "Thanks Kate." My mom calls from her room.

I pick Annie up from her crib and hold her. She is so sweet and gentle I look at her right wrist and stare at the little heart. I look at my own bare wrist. I was born without a heart. Doctors said I was the only case of it they had ever seen. It hurt knowing I will never be loved or never will love, but I guess I got over it. I will never have a mate but only my family knows that I have kept it secret my whole life. No one at school knows.

Some people at my school already have their mates. I keep my markless wrist covered or I draw on the absent heart. People have asked when I think I will find my soul mate but I just doge the conversation, after so long I fear someone will discover my deformity.

I set Annie down and pack my bag for school. I throw my long wavy blond hair in a high pony and slipped a hoodie on over that is long enough to cover my wrist. I pack my bag and my lunch and im good to head out for school. I walk alone so I put head phones in and listen to my music and depart, locking the door behind me.

On they way I run into one of my friends, Miranda. She is one of my closest friends, I have shared every thing with her except my most detremental secret. We chat and talk the whole way and go to our separate first periods. Inside waits Haley another one of my best friends who I have all of the same classes with except one.

The day goes on as usual until my 4th period. I sit across from Haley and behind a guy named Jackson. He dosent really know me but I know about him. Well I have heard talk about him. Some people say that he found his mate when he was 3.

We have a pop quiz so he hands back the paper and his hand accidently touches mine and I feel a mix of crazy emotions. I become overwhelmed and drop the stack of paper. "Sorry" He smiles with his perfect smile. He picks them up and sets them on my desk. "Good Luck." He winks "Uh you too." I say while I try to focus on the upcoming math terror.

The quiz drones on and I barely finish when the bell rings to release us. I turn in my paper to Mr. Wallis. As I'm going out the door Haley stops me. "What was that with Jackson?" She questions. "Nothing." I nervously reply. "Oh my God, he is your mate isn't he!" She squeals. "Let me see your wrist." She grabs and my arm as I frantically try to pull away, I didn't draw the one thing that makes me normal on this morning. Despite my struggle she grabs at my arm and pulls up the sleave.
