I look around for my friends, hoping they're waiting for me.
Nope.
I spot them walking into school without me.
I run and try to catch up, hoping they haven't forgotten me.
Nahh, it's just this game we like to play. It's kind of like hide and seek, except they don't hide very well. And I'm always the seeker. No fair.
"Hey! Sophia! Maralyn! Wait for me!" I yell, finally catching up to them.
They pause and look back to me. "Oh, hey, Emma. You found us. Yay."
"Yes I did. Haha! So what are we gonna do tonight? Go shopping? Visit the arcade? Hang out with boys?" I tease. They love flirting with boys, yet never invite me to tag along when they do.
I think they just don't want me to get hurt by a boy.
But I'm not stupid! I can tell when a boy just wants to play with a girls feelings.
Like all of their exes. I tried to tell them, but they never listen to me.
Sophia glares at me. "Sorry, Emma, but I have family plans tonight."
"Oh," I sigh. I look at Maralyn. "What about you? Huh? How about going out and getting our nails done? Well?"
She looks down at her hands, then waves them in front of my face. "I got them done yesterday. And these are so pretty. So the answer is no. Besides, I have gymnastics tonight. So I can't. Sorry."
I give her a puzzling look. "Since when do you go to gymnastics? You said you weren't flexible enough last time we talked about that, which was...last month?"
She turns around. "I decided to take it because why not? Now, we have some....student activity meeting to attend. Adios."
I watch them walk away, and disappear into the school without me.
Oh.
I didn't think they were in the student activity council. Ha ha, they just probably just wanted to surprise me. They're so nice!
I just wish we could hang out again sometime....oh well. I'll see them at lunch!
Mmm, taco Tuesday. My favourite!
***
I walk into the cafeteria, looking around for Sophia and Maralyn.
I spot a bunch of tables full of people talking, but none where my two friends are.
Hmm.
Maybe they're just late.
I'd wait for them at our table, but it's full. As is every table in here.
I'll just wait for them outside!
I get my lunch and walk out the door, finding a nice, quiet spot to sit.
It's in the shade, in front of a big cherry blossom tree.
I eat by myself, patiently waiting for my friends to show up, but they never do.
Instead, someone else does.
"What are you doing out here?" He speaks, his voice smooth as velvet, like God himself is speaking to me.
"Huh?" I ask, looking up to find one of the cutest boys I have ever seen.
His black hair falls losely, but most of it is hidden under a black baseball cap. His eyes are blocked by a pair of dark sunglasses. Tall, skinny and nicely tanned. The corner of his lips twist up into a slight smile, obviously amused.
He lifts his glasses and puts them on his hat. "Why are you out here all alone?"
His eyes glint a sparkling shade of green with a hint of blue.
I tilt my head, then clue in and slightly chuckle. "I'm just waiting for my friends! They should be here soon. All the tables inside were occupied, so I decided to dine outside! It's so nice out here. Why are you out here? Who are you?"
He raises an eyebrow and sticks his hands into his pockets.
Holy heck. He's hot. Wait until Maralyn and Sophia find out. They'll be so jealous!
"The name's James. I saw you alone and got curious as to why you were out here. I haven't seen you around before. Who are you?"
I smile. "I'm Emma. I usually just...try to play it cool. It works! Ah!" I half yell as half my taco falls onto my lap.
James stiffles a laugh. "Well, uh, Emma, you seem a little...childish."
I try to clean myself off. "Uhhh....." I trail off.
"I'm gonna head back now." He says, placing his sunglasses on and strolls away.
I watch him walk in astonishment, unable to believe the beauty of him. He just looks so good. Like how? Is that even possible? Is he even human?
Wait.
What if he isn't?
I laugh at myself and continue to eat the rest of my lunch alone.
