We all scream as we fall. We scream for a few moments and then, we all crash on the ground. I groan, rubbing arms and back as much as I can, and get up, stumbling a bit.
"There's a light over there," Kyle says as he walks to it. "Oh, it's a fairy!"
I stand next to him and look at the creature he's holding in his hands. She has a dress made out of leaves, blond hair and a mischievous look.
"It's Tinker Bell!" I squeal, taking the fairy. "Hey, you... You're so pretty..." I coo until I receive something hard on my nose.
"In our world, the fairies aren't peaceful with those who treat them like you just did. They are actually smart and cunning," Freda states, smiling at me while I drop the fairy in her hands. "Do you have something for us?" she asks the fairy.
Tinker Bell, that how I decide to name her, nods excitedly and flies forwards.
"We should follow her," Kyle says. "Without her light, we will be in the dark and honestly, I'm not up for it."
As we walk at the same pace as the fairy's, I glance at Kyle. I haven't had a chance to ask him about that girl, Ila, and his dream. But I choose not to say a word about it: it seems to be a sensitive subject and we aren't really that close. But, Freda did say he liked me... That's nonsense, I've known him for what, two days? I need to stop thinking about this. I shake these thoughts away and concentrate on walking.
Tinker Bell stops at dragon sculpture and sits on its nose, looking at us with mean eyes.
"She doesn't like us, obviously," I mumble at Kyle.
"Fairies don't like to be bonded to one person, they like being free of their doing. The ancients must have put her here to guide anyone who enters the castle and made a treaty with her," he explains.
"Why make a treaty with old guys if she wants to be free? It's really stupid."
"I understand the human language, you know?" someone speaks with a high voice. "Just because I'm not as big as you doesn't mean that I can't be as intelligent, if not more." Tinker Bell says while staring straight in my eyes.
I blush in embarrassment and look away. "I didn't mean that..." I try to excuse myself but she cuts me off.
"I made a treaty with the ancients because I was a criminal and I wanted freedom. The deal was that I must guide everyone through this maze. If they find the Book, I'm free. If not, I have to wait for another one. In the past centuries, no one made it: I have lost hope. You will all die, so pray the Earth a lot." she tells us with a defeated tone.
"What was your crime?" I ask her, intrigued. How could such a tiny creature do something bad?
"I killed a boy on my island. He wanted to stay here forever and I couldn't let him."
"What was his name? Why did he want to stay?"
She sighs loudly to show how much I annoy her. "Everyone who arrives on the island stays forever young. But this boy wanted to bring more and more people here and the island couldn't have saved us all. So, I decided to kill him to save all of my fellow fairies." she says proudly.
"Was his name Peter? Peter Pan?" I ask. Please, let it be another boy, please...
"I think his name was Peter, yes." She shrugs.
"How could you know this story?" Freda asks me.
"On Earth, it's a fairy tale. Tinker Bell is Peter Pan's best friend and she looks so much like you that I thought... Never mind." I fake a smile.
