"Good morning Emily, this is Dr. Mayer's he's my assistant for today he'll just be observing and making observations if you don't mind," I say walking into yet another patient's room.
"Oh no, I don't mind!" She smiles.
"Okay, so how're you feeling? Any pain?" I ask as I started to perform an ultrasound.
"No no, no pain. It's easier than my last pregnancy. This time around i'm just eating and gaining weight," She laughs making me laugh.
"That's good! To gain weight for yourself and for the baby. But try to keep it a minimum we don't want to have the baby overweight and then have some complications during labor and delivery and all that," I mention as her and her husband nod.
"Gotcha doc!" She says.
"Do you know the sex of the baby yet? Do you want to know or keep it a surprise?" I ask looking directly at them.
"We want it to be a surprise, I'm planning on having a gender reveal party soon," She says.
"What would you hope for?" I ask.
"A boy," The husband says, "Definitely a boy.. we both hope for a boy but you know as long as it's healthy that's all that matters."
"Right," I nod as I move the transducer around the bottom of her stomach pushing in lightly.
"So would you want me to call a friend or relative or put it in an envelope or how do you want this to work?"
"We were actually hoping you could call my sister because she's planning the party."
"Okay, just let me know.." I say cleaning the gel off her stomach.
"You're all set, you can pick up some paperwork at the front desk.. I will see you two on your next appointment!" I smile standing up and taking the gloves off my hands.
"Thank you so much Dr. Almanzar!" The husband says.
"No problem, have a good day!" I smile motioning for Rakim to come with me.
"C'mon, you wanna go with me to go see the newborn babies?" I ask closing the door behind myself.
"Y-Yeahh," He chuckles.
"What?" I ask.
"Nothing..nothing," He shakes his head laughing.
We walk around the corner to where we kept the newborns waiting to be checked up. We stood behind the large glass window looking over at the babies sleeping.
"Man, I aint ever seen so many babies at once."
"Right," I laugh, "I mean Im used to it now so.." I trail off.
"So what do they do? Like how long do they usually stay?" He questions.
"Three days tops."
"You keep them in there ALL DAY?!" He shouts.
"Shhhh," I laugh quieting him down, "No, when a woman gives birth we take the babies clean them weigh them and do tests and they stay in whatever room their mother gave birth in right?" I ask making him laugh, "These particular babies are the ones that get put up for adoption."
"Oh, see I thought you meant like once they're born they stay in this room all day."
"Nah," I laugh, "See by the time a woman is ready to give birth the adoptive parents are here and everything's set for them to leave."
"Gotcha," He nods looking at a passerby, "I feel kinda bad though like all these babies gonna be going home with strangers and shit."
"Yeah," I sigh looking at them all, "We get like teenagers in here all the time who's parents convince them to put their kid up for adoption and then we have people who were never ready to have kids.. so yeah."
"Damn," He shakes his head before his phone starts vibrating.
He takes his phone out his pocket and the contact name reads 'Manager'.
"Yo," He answers the phone, "I'm over here with Aaliyah at her job," He smiles looking up at me, "Yeah I know, "Bro you said meet at three," He laughs, "Aight bro, I'll catch you bye."
"What happened?" I ask leaning on the wall.
"Nah John wants me to be at the meeting early because he's gotta fly to LA to be with Ferg and all that."
"Oh alright."
"What time you off?" He asks putting his phone away.
"At twelve."
"Ohhh two hours not even, where you wanna go after this?" He asks as we start to walk to my office.
"Umm I wanna go get something to eat," I laugh.
"Me too."
"DR.ALMANZAR! Patient in room 233 is going into labor.. her contractions are minutes apart! We have to go!" One of the nurses say coming up to me and Rakim.
"A-A-Alright! Um, babe you wanna hold this and stay out here?" I ask as we hurry up to the room that was all the way at the end of the hallway.
"Yeah, Ima be in your office I don't think I can see all that before we go eat some food," He says making me laugh, "Good luck though," He says before kissing me, "Not that you need it!" He laughs.
I hurry up to the room and put on my mask and gloves. I throw on the protective coat over my scrubs and push my hair back.
"Kids," I say bending down to them as they sat on the couch, "I'm gonna need you three to stay outside this door so that I can prepare your mommy to give birth."
"Okay doctor," One of them says.
"Alrighttt!" I laugh helping them out the room, "There's a waiting room around the corner you can sit in there and watch tv."
"Okay."
"Alright," I sigh walking back in the room, "I need blankets and everything set up for the baby!" I shout.
"Doctor I don't think I can do thisss!" The woman cries.
"You got this girl, You did it three other times this one's gonna be quick and easy!" I say trying to calm her down.
The woman was alone. A single mom. She didn't even have a relative in the room with her. She was surrounded by us doctors.
"Doctor!" She cries more.
"You got this!" Brooklyn says trying to calm her down, "Put your legs up and keep right there on my mark you're gonna push okay?" Brooklyn looks at the patient before looking at me.
"Ready? PUSH!" Brooklyn shouts.
"I cannntttt!"
"C'mon give me one big push," I say holding out my hands to be ready for the baby's head to come out, "Almost there she's almost here mama c'mon one more big push!"
And there she was. No matter how many times I have did this, it never gets old when you're the first one to see the baby.
We all start cleaning the baby and I cut the umbilical cord. I wrap the baby in a blanket and hand her to her mom. That connection after the babies are born are important. Skin to skin is important.
It wasn't until thirty minutes past twelve when I was finally able to go meet back up with Rakim in my office.
"How'd it go?" He asks as I walk in.
"Never gets old..," I smile making him smile.
"You ready to clock out?" He laughs making me laugh.
"Yeah, c'mon!" I roll my eyes playfully.
