CHAPTER 3
PERCEPTIONS
Ten minutes had passed, and not one of them has said a word. Time after time, he would look at her, and she would do the same. Their eyes met for about four times already, and Caddie felt uneasy.
Maybe sitting with a stranger was a bad decision after all.
“You’ve been here for a long time now. Don’t you have any important matter to attend to?”
Wait. What did he just say?
Caddie was stunned by his arrogant remark. She tried to keep her composure, and sealed her lips tightly. She just needed to make this airhead fly into the sky. A little kindness will do the trick.
“Well, I'm starting to get dry. I guess I’ll be leaving in a few minutes, thank you.” Caddie said, injecting a few milligrams of sarcasm. She wished her comeback was a bitter pill he’d swallow immediately.
He nodded.
"But before I go, I would like to know who I owe this wonderful favor to?" Caddie asked, trying to incorporate more kindness in her statement.
His eyes gave her a feeling of uneasy shivers. She wanted to avoid his darting gaze, but she knew that this was a game.
And she definitely cannot lose to this robot.
There is just no way you’ll win mister.
Surprisingly, he played his cards real well.
"I'm Evan. Sorry for the inconvenience I have caused you, if there were any. I hope you won’t have a negative impression about me after this coincidental encounter." He replied, stressing on the word coincidental.
Caddie flashed her perfect smile. His name was quite not appropriate for this kind of guy.
Evan? Hmph.
In the past, the name Evan gave her a sense of lightness. Of chivalry. Of compassion.
Okay, stop.
This guy was seriously the exception.
At that moment, Evan thought of possibilities. This stranger responded with kindness. Did she even realize his remarks were mixed with hints of mockery?
This is unbelievable.
Though it was difficult to admit, Evan was stunned by her presence.
Not too many people would have gone the extra mile to answer with a humane tone. Most would not even have the guts to answer back.
On the outside, he acted like a tough nut to crack.
But something inside him dictated that this might just be a lucky day for him.
He badly needed to discover something unpleasant about her, and fast. Before he…
"Am I destroying your schedule? You're here alone, and I assume you're waiting for someone?” she asked.
Evan. Think of a good reply. Think.
He glared, “Well, at least you’re perceptive.”
Good one. She couldn’t give a remark to that.
Evan’s reply was a slap on Caddie’s face. She gulped. How could she think of being cruel, when this guy might just have missed something good?
Argh. My ego got the best of me.
How could she not have considered this possibility when she devised the whole thing?
"I'm really sorry. I didn’t mean to destroy your plan. I… I shall leave now. To lessen your burden. Again, I’m really… seriously sorry." Caddie apologized truthfully, as she motioned to stand up.
