CHAPTER 5

INSTANCES

Conversations, no matter how interesting they are, had to end. Not because the people involved always choose to, but because time existed. Caddie and Evan weren’t exempted from this.

After a tall cup of mocha latte, and about five slices of apricot bars, Caddie was definitely full.

“You don’t look so good.” Evan commented after seeing Caddie lean against the chair’s backrest.

“I’m fine. It’s just a sugar rush.” Caddie spoke softly, both of her eyes closed.

Evan began to panic. Just a sugar rush? I can’t believe I let her eat those sweets. Stay calm. Think Evan. Think.

Evan raised his hand. A waiter came quickly.

            “Yes...?”

“A glass of water please.” Evan answered without letting the waiter finish talking.

The waiter rushed to the counter.

Caddie still had her eyes closed. Evan stood and pulled his chair to her side. He didn’t know what to do. His hands began to shiver.

“What exactly are you feeling?” Evan asked, positioning his arms on her shoulders and back as support.

“You’re making a big fuss about this Evan.” Caddie replied, trying to make her voice sound normal.

“Faster sir.” Evan shouted to the waiter. He checked Caddie’s fingers. Her fingernails were turning blue.

“This is nothing.” Caddie said, opening her eyes and removing her hand from Evan’s hold. She sat upright and looked at the window.

Evan searched for the waiter. Why is it too difficult to get a glass of water?

After a minute, the waiter was walking toward the table. Evan stood up, and grabbed the tray from the waiter’s hands.

“Here’s some water.” Evan spoke, holding the glass in front of Caddie.

            “I told you I’m…”

            “Drink.” Evan replied with authority.

Their eyes met as Caddie faced Evan in obvious disobedience.

Evan slightly raised his eyebrows. “What? You are drinking this miss.”

Caddie locked her eyes on Evan. Is this guy really worried or just guilty? I told him I was okay. Eventually, she got the glass of water, and drank the water until the last drop.

“Good. Thank you.” Evan replied calmly, getting the glass from Caddie’s hand.

Caddie checked her watch. “Oh dear. I can’t believe it’s already 6pm.”

Evan looked at the café’s digital clock to confirm her statement. He feared that they were about to part ways already.

It was really 6 o’ clock.
