It's Saturday nightI had come back from my sister's wedding, which I had to wake up at 5:00 for, and I just woke up from a nap. Fun fact: I almost cried during the ceremony.
I must have slept through the notification, but when I woke up, I had one new alert from Instagram."[alexchangggg] natalya.rezza: heya"
She was the girl who had requested me a few days ago. I accepted and quickly followed her back, as I noticed that some of my classmates from Columbia had also followed her. I didn't get to look at her profile, nor could I see her clearly since her icon was so small.
Then I realized it was her. Her name was Natalya.
Before responding, I looked through her profile. "Wow", I said to myself. She was even more ethereal than I thought.
I decided to stay cool, responding with "Hey", acting totally nonchalant. We started talking about my sister's wedding, and about class at Columbia.
[alexchangggg]:
"Bruh I feel like none of us in class have formally introduced ourselves, like idk who tf anyone is/where they're from"[natalya.rezza]:
"Dude me 2 i think i know the names of like 4 people in our class and thas it. im natalya btw in case u didnt kno looool"It was at that moment that I saw my chance. I decided to confer with my two best friends, Ruben and Gary.
I asked "y'all theres this really cute girl in my class and she just hmu what are the moves boys" in our group chat over iMessage.
Of course, Ruben, being the meme that he is, said "MY BOY IS SO IN LOVEEEEE". They knew my history, and they knew my opinions on relationships in high school.
And yet they told me to go for it, to take the leap, to jump with no inhibitions.
We discussed for almost ten minutes before I mustered up the courage. I decided that I would send a simple text saying that she was the first one I noticed in class, which was the truth.
[alexchangggg]:
"lmaoo yeah i figured by ur username"
"u were prob one of the first ppl i noticed in class bc u hella pretty lmaoo"It was 12:30AM, Saturday. I left my phone in the living room, far from my room, as if this would save me from the wrong reaction. Maybe I made the wrong move. Maybe she just wanted to talk, to ask me about homework, to inquire about MTA Transit. But I didn't care.
I went to sleep smiling that night.
~
The next morning, I awoke to a dream. Except it wasn't a dream, it was reality. She said she felt the same about me. I felt a wave of relief flush over my face.
We talked the entire day, July 7th. I got her snap, we talked about our embarrassing pasts, school, and how the program was.
Then I asked her where she was from.
"Malaysia", she said.Immediately, my heart fell. How could God be so cruel? The one person that I had fully fell in love with, that I had imagined a future with, that I had such an affection for, lived 15000 kilometers away.
At that moment I vowed that I would make her the happiest girl in New York for the last week.
[alexchangggg]:
"u tryna do sumn for lunch tmrw ??"[natalya.rezza]:
"yeaa im so down !!"I took the leap.
