"Hey," Issac's voice startled me, as I wasn't expecting him to come out here this late."What's up?" I asked, scooting over so he could sit down with me.
I was currently back by the cliff he showed me a couple days ago, my legs dangling off the edge as I watched the waves below.
"We missed you at dinner. Couldn't find you in your room so my next guess was here," he explained.
I felt kind of guilty for missing dinner, everyone eating together seemed to be one very important thing in the Bryant household.
"I'm so sorry, I just-"
"Don't apologize," he gave a smile. "I know you're still adjusting to things. It's okay."
I smile appreciatively at his understanding. We sat there for a while in silence, admiring the view for a while before he spoke up again.
"Can I ask you something?"
I looked over at him, nodding for him to continue.
"Do you think you'll ever see us as your family?" he asked, seeming nervous.
I sat there for a while in silence, my mind racing with a thousand different thoughts. Could I ever see them as family? I mean, I had one. It might not have been the best, but you can't just replace something like a family either. On the other hand though, the idea of being apart of them, apart of their home, I liked that idea sometimes.
"Honestly? I have no idea. Sometimes I think so," I started.
"But?"
I took a deep breath. "-but the other part of me doesn't think it's possible. The family I came from, it's a lot different from how you guys live," I bit my lip, studying his reaction to my words before I said anything else. "You know, don't you?" I asked.
He caught my eye, a look of guilt flashing in them before he nodded, a sad smile on his face. "I know, but not because of my mom." I furrowed my brows in confusion as he went on to explain. "I was up with my mom helping her clean up the kitchen one night when the news started playing on the tv. The body of missing 17 year old Mason Davidson has been found," he paused, watching me. Savannah and Joshua Davidson were arrested and charged for their son's death. 13 year old Davina has been reported safe and in the care of the state."
Issac quoted major headlines from the news broadcasts that were, at the time, constantly updating everyone on the trial and where things headed with my parents conviction. It was like he had memorized them, nearly word for word.
