Motionless I stared at my mom's car totally demolished. I heard Aiden run behind me and abruptly stopped beside me. I turned to see Aiden's face and at that moment I was in denial.

'Mom was not in that car.' I thought as I darted passed the crowd of people to the front door of my house. I slammed the door opened.

"Mom?!" My voice cracked. I had hoped that mom would be coming out of the kitchen telling me she had forgotten to pick us up from school that day. "Mom!" I shouted once more.

"Chloe!" Aiden said standing at the doorway.

"No! No! No! I can't. This can't be real. This is a nightmare and I'm just waiting to wake up." I said as reality hit me. I couldn't picture mom actually leaving just like that in a spilt moment. "Mom is gone." I whispered. My eyes flooded with tears and I couldn't stop crying.

Olivia walked into the door and started crying as she saw Aiden and I huddled on the floor by the sofa. She didn't say a word. She slowly made her way over to us and we huddled together. Aiden tried to stay strong and comfort Olivia and I, but I knew he was hurting too. Mom was all we had and knew growing up. Now that she's gone we have no one.

"What now?" Olivia wiped her tears from her cheek. "I mean we don't even know any of our family." She sniffled.

"I don't know Liv, I don't know." He replied.

"Aiden, Olivia, and Chloe Hastings?" A police officer said standing behind us at the doorway.

We turned around and looked up and saw him and Aiden gestured that it was us.

"I'm terribly sorry for your lost." He said.

No one said a word. I stared at him. 'Being sorry isn't going to bring her back.' I thought.

"My name is Officer Reynolds and we think your mother was part of a premeditated hit and run. We are still investigating, but as for now we have to find you a home."

"Why would anyone want to kill my mother? She was an amazing person, why would anyone want to kill her?" I blurted.

"Like I said we don't know why or who killed her, we can only rely on security cameras and people's testimonies." He paused. "We are in the process of finding you a place to stay with maybe one of your relatives. Where is your father?" he asked.

We all exchanged looked and stared at Aiden to answer the question.

"My dad died before I was born in the war, but my step dad left us when I was 4 years old. Since then it's only been Mom, Olivia, Chloe, and I. We don't really keep in touch with any of our family." He took a deep breath.

"Okay, I will try to contact one of your relatives, if I can't reach any, I will have to find you a home in the meantime we look for other relatives. So can you kids gather your belongings and I will call you if I found you kids a home." Officer Reynolds headed back to his police car.

"Kids." I mimicked angrily. "Who does he think we are? We can certainly take care of ourselves."

"Chloe come on, let's get our things. It's only for a little while, until he can find a relative that can take us in." Aiden said.

"I don't want to go. We spent all our lives here and I don't want to spend it elsewhere." Olivia said.

"I mean I don't trust whoever does decide to take us in. For all we know it can be a psychopath or a pedophile." I crossed my arms.

"Okay clearly you have been watching way too many crime shows. Those kinds of things don't happen in real life."

"I'm not leaving a foot out of here." I said.
