“Hey, sorry if I scared you,” he says apologetically and shoving his hands into his usual black hoodie pockets.

“Oh, no. No worries,” I say shaking my head and dog earing my book page and looking up at the handsome boy in front of me.

“Good,” he says quietly and he bashfully toes his foot at the ground, watching it. It’s silent for a moment.

I clear my throat awkwardly, “Um, Eric?”

“Hmm?” he hums still poking at the ground with his sneaker.

“How was your first day at school?”

“My first day?” he asks as though he has no idea what I am talking about and he looks up with one of his dark eyebrows raised.

“Yah, well it was your first day right?”

“Ha,” he laughs, “Yah it was.”

“Well,” I repeat, “how was it?”

“Oh well you know, just had to get my new books and stuff and one of the secretaries had to show me my classes. I learn my homeroom tomorrow.”

“Oh cool. Well I guess I don’t have you in one of my classes.”

“Well what grade are you in?” he asks shyly and adds, “I’m in grade twelve.”

“Oh,” I say looking down at my hands which are on my lap then look back up to him, he is looking down at me with question all over his face. “I’m in grade eleven.”

“That must be why,” he says, and do I hear disappointment in his voice?

 “Must be,” I answer calmly.

It is silent again, and I look up at Eric who is looking up at the sky, watching something?

“What are you looking at Eric?” I ask looking up also.

 “Oh, just Tammrock.”

  “Tammrock?”

“The bird,” he says and I look at him, he looks back down at me and gives a dim smile and nods with his head up. I look up again and then I spot it, a black bird spinning in lazy circles just a little above the canopy of trees. It’s the bird I saw yesterday after I met Eric.

“Oh,” I gasp and I hear Eric chuckle.

“You probably think I’m weird,” he says discreetly and I look back at him and he is now walking to the other side of the grove of trees, about five meters away from me and he is  now starting to sit down with his back pressed up against the tree.
