Scene 1

SCENE ONE

SETTING : DINING ROOM : LOUISE, CATHERINE, PRES. MAV

........................

CAMERA : Shows LOUISE and her parents at the dinner table. CATHERINE and PRES. MAV are smiling as they eat.

(INTERCUT to LOUISE picking at her food. A letter is beside her plate, and she's glaring at it. CATHERINE and PRES. MAV have a conversation in the background. )

LOUISE (voiceover) : You may be wondering how I got into this situation.

("Tear In My Heart" plays)

(INTERCUT TO an earlier time in the day.)

(MONTAGE — LOUISE is shown to have different positions on a couch, reading a book, writing, using her phone, etc.)

LOUISE (voiceover):November 17th. Ang sixteenth birthday ko.
Also, the most dreaded day of my life.
Alam kong dadating na 'yun. That stupid letter of that stupid law that the President made.
Never kong nagustuhan 'yung program na ginawa ng Presidente. It restricts us from freely loving someone — it puts us to chains with someone na hindi naman natin gusto. I don't know how some people make it work, but I know that I can't.
Ayoko lang talagang makulong habambuhay kasama ang taong 'di ko mahal.
Pero wala akong choice. No matter how much I want to hate the person who made the law...

("Tear In My Heart" stops abruptly.) MONTAGE stops, INTERCUT back to LOUISE at DINNER, glaring at her letter while picking at her food.

LOUISE (voiceover) : I can't.

PRES. MAV :Louise?

LOUISE (voiceover) : Have I mentioned that the President just so happens to be my father?

PRES. MAV: Louise, anak?

(LOUISE snaps back to reality and straightens up. )

LOUISE : Yes po?

(CAMERA shows PRES. MAV smiling at Louise. )

PRES. MAV :Don't you want to open your letter?

(CAMERA shows all three of them. )

(LOUISE sighs, and puts down her spoon. She puts her hands on her lap, and looks at PRES. MAV. )

LOUISE : Dad, para saan ba talaga ang SM161117?

PRES. MAV: (sighs, and puts his utensils down. He clasps his hands together and looks at LOUISE seriously. CATHERINE straightens up too. )

PRES. MAV : Ang SM161117 ang naging solusyon sa napakalaking problema ng bansa natin noon. Hindi lumilipas ang isang araw ng wala kang mababalitaang nagpapatayan. The reason for all the crimes? Love.

(LOUISE's expression turned confused. )

LOUISE : So ang solution mo, tanggalan ng karapatang magmahal ang mga tao? Isn't that unfair?

(PRES. MAV shook his head. )

PRES. MAV — I'm not taking away their right to love. Pwede pa rin magmahal ang mga tao, basta 'yung assigned sa kanila ang mamahalin nila.

(CAMERA shows LOUISE, now fuming with anger. LOUISE shook her head and clicked her tongue, producing a 'tsk' sound. )

LOUISE : Kabobohan!

(LOUISE stands up abruptly and walks out of the DINING ROOM. )

(CAMERA shows PRES. MAV and CATHERINE, left at the dinner table. )

(CATHERINE attempts to follow LOUISE.)

CATHERINE : Anak! (Concerned voice)

(PRES. MAV holds CATHERINE's wrist, stopping her from following LOUISE. )

PRES. MAV : Let her be. Someday, Louise will realize it.

(CAMERA shows LOUISE'S LETTER, left beside her plate. )

PRES. MAV (voiceover) : Ang SM161117 ay para sa ikabubuti ng lahat.
