Chapter Five
Kyren took me to a small ice cream shop on the edge of town called Enlightenment, where there were hardly any people. I laughed at the name of the shop, and told Kyren that the name didn’t make any sense, because ice cream didn’t make you lighter at all, in fact it did just the opposite. He laughed, even though it was a lame joke, and I felt like I had won a small victory.
We ordered our sundaes and Kyren refused stubbornly when I tried to pay for my own. We took our ice cream outside and sat beneath a large oak tree. It was very peaceful and we ate our ice cream happily. There was a comfortable silence between us, until Kyren reached over and stole a scoop of my chocolate sundae. “Hey!” I swiped a spoonful of his mint ice cream. He laughed and swallowed his stolen bounty. I did the same and savored the minty cool taste. “So, Ash,” He watched me with a small grin on his face. “How did you end up in our small town?” I remembered our conversation on my first day during gym class, and finished my ice cream before answering. “I told you, my parents think that we can fulfill our destinies here.” Kyren snorted. “In Whisper Falls, wow.” I smirked at the expression on his face.
“What about you? Have you lived here for your entire life?” He got a faraway look in his eyes. “Almost. I haven’t seen my parents for years. I don’t remember much about my childhood, but I remember certain things, like living in a really big house, and other people there,” He stared at me. “But I don’t really remember my parents. It’s like there’s a hole in my memory when it comes to them.” I frowned. “That’s horrible!” Kyren shrugged and looked into the trees. “It’s not, really. I don’t think we were very close.” I sat quietly until he spoke again. I spent most of my time with a girl named Ashalynn actually.”
I froze and stared at him. “She looked just like you, but she was kidnapped from her family’s house in Russia when she was young.” My parents had always told me that I was Russian, but that we’d left our home there to come to America because they wanted a change of scenery. Now I wasn’t so sure, because this seemed like too much of a coincidence.
I pulled my phone from my pocket and clicked on Kyren’s picture from his blog. I passed my phone to him and whispered so quietly that I was sure that he heard me. “I see you, and the knife.” I didn’t mention my own knife, safely tucked in my bag in his car.
Kyren’s gaze flicked from the picture to my face. I stood up. “Maybe you should just take me home now.” I started to walk to the car, but Kyren grabbed my hand and spun me around.
My face was inches from his, and he gazed into my eyes, and I felt like he was peering into my soul. “I missed you Ash.”
He tilted his head and our lips met in a kiss. I instinctively kissed him back, a flame sparking inside me, telling me that there was something that I didn’t know about him, yet I was determined to discover it. I felt like I knew him, but I didn’t know how that could be possible.
His lip rings pressed against my mouth. Kyren broke the kiss, and I pored over his perfect features, the feel of his lips imprinted on mine.
“Okay, not that I minded that at all,” Kyren smiled widely. “But what was that for? You missed me? I feel like I know you but I’ve never met you before I moved here!” His face crumpled. My heart skipped a beat at his expression of dismay. I took his hand. “I think I would remember meeting someone like you.” He smiled sadly, still holding my hand and our fingers knotted together. We sat down again together, and any thoughts of going home fled my mind. Still holding onto me as though he planned to never let go, Kyren told me the story of how he’d ended up in Whisper Falls.
He’d been born to a rich family in Europe, and lived in the same house with another family that had a daughter named Ashalynn.
The house was more of a castle, like the one that I was living in, and Kyren missed it dearly. He told me of Ashalynn, and how they played together all the time. He talked about a world that I only knew through my secret books. “Even though we were young, we knew we were meant to be together. I’ve never felt the same way around any girl since her.” He gazed at me meaningfully. “Until I met you.” I smiled and squeezed his hand. He continued his story.
