Chapter Six

In the week that followed I watched Prue closely and she appeared to be an average toddler, but now that I was looking for it, I noticed that there was a very wise glint in her eyes. It was as though she had seen a great many things and through that she had gained ancient knowledge. I understood the diary entry when I looked into Prue’s eyes, whatever power made her the way she was, was immortal. Prue might live forever, if she stayed the same age for eternity. And if she wasn’t immortal, she would certainly live longer than any mortal.

The thought caused shivers to run up my spine. As I watched my sister now, playing with her toys, she seemed unaware of my gaze. Mom and Dad had decided that they were going on a date tonight, thus completely ruining my Saturday night plans because I had to babysit Prue.

I had been looking forward to today because Ryan, Liv, Trinity and I had been planning to go see a movie in the town’s one showing movie theater. The theater was showing some action movie that all three of them wanted to see, and Trinity and Liv were both willing to tolerate each other for one night for my sake. They seemed to be making an effort to get along so that I could be with both of them at the same time, instead of having to choose one of them. I didn’t know if Trinity would go, now that I had been forced to stay home, although I didn’t think she would pass up an opportunity to prove to Ryan that she was better than Liv.

She’d confided in me one night while were hanging out in my library. Trinity had an enormous crush on Ryan, though she didn’t make a big deal of telling me as she helped me work through my Latin prophecy books. It turned out that her parents had forced her to learn Latin when she was young, and now they spoke it fluently at home, so she was an enormous help.

I had felt like I could trust Trinity with the secret of my books, and the voice had approved of my choice. Trinity had been surprisingly accepting, where someone else may have though that I was crazy.

So far we had gotten through twice as much as I would have been able to do by myself. But none of the pages we examined contained any more about the prophecy, but Trinity was convinced that it was about me, especially after I told her about my painful attacks.

I continued to watch Prue as I wondered about the prophecy. She walked to up me and took one of my hands in both her tiny ones. “Ash, I know that you found out my secret.” I went still. “What do you mean Prue?”

She smiled at me and handed me one of her toy unicorns. “I’m special Ash. I’m supposed to look eleven but I don’t.” I stared at her, unsure of how to respond. “Prue,” I began, but she cut me off. “It’s okay Ash. We don’t need to talk about it. I just miss Mom and Dad.”

I gave her a funny look as I fiddled with the unicorn I was holding. “Mom and Dad will be home in a few hours.” Prue sighed as she gazed at me with something like pity, and then asked me to play with her. I help up the unicorn and made a neighing sound, trying to ignore the strange conversation I’d just had with my sister.

The next week of school was painfully boring, although my classes with Kyren were always interesting. As I spent more time with him, I seemed to become invisible to everyone except Trinity, Ryan and Liv. People seemed surprised when they realized that I was in their class, but I didn’t mind, I had all the friends I needed.

During the week, Kyren and I hung out more, and even went back to Enlightenment for ice cream, although we stayed away from the forest. Now that I had accepted what Kyren had been telling me about my past, many hours were spent telling each other what had happened in our lives since we were separated. Neither of us seemed to know what had pulled us apart, but Kyren thought that I had been kidnapped.
