It was quick, fuck, it was quick. I remember sitting on my bed, texting my best friend Adam when I heard the gun fire. I rush to the window and see Mr King across the street shooting people. I see people eating other people. I almost threw up, I tried phoning Adam but the phone wasn't ringing. I rush downstairs but that's when I saw them. My parents. Being gnawed on by mindless assholes. They didn't notice me slip into the kitchen and grab my dad's pistol (which he hid under the kitchen sink). I bolted for Blake's room, I ran in and began stuffing clothes into his backpack. He got up, looked at me and then rubbed his eyes. "Ava, what are you doing?" he asked in his cute six year old voice, "we need to go Blake, you have to trust me." I said pulling him into my room. I got him out of his spider-man footie pyjamas and put a white t-shirt, jeans and a grey hoody on him. I did up the velcro straps on his sneakers and put his old fashioned grey cap on his head. I got dressed quickly, grabbed a backpack and stuffed essentials in it. We snuck out my window, on to the shed roof and made our way for Atlanta, big mistake...
Blake's fingers were interwoven with mine as we made our way through the woods. It had been a month since the initial outbreak and we'd been running from place to place, hoping for a break. "Where are we going?" Blake asked looking all around him, "I saw a grocery store about a half a mile from here, we could use more food." I explained best I could. Blake nodded and continued humming a tune I'd been using to help him sleep. It's difficult sleeping with a bunch of flesh eating bastards chasing you. I pushed past some bushes and saw the grocery store. "Ok Blake, you stay close ok?" I asked and he nodded. His baby blue eyes sparkling in the sunlight. We walked down the hill, I killed two walkers and busted the door open. "Ok, you go look for this stuff and I'll look for this stuff." I said handing Blake a piece of paper with simple food items on it. I was getting medication and other things. I'm seventeen, don't judge. I browsered the isles looking for anything useful when Blake screaming caught my attention. "Blake?!" I shouted running in the direction of his shout, my hand clutching the knife which was straped to my thigh. My hunting rifle bouncing off my back whilst I sprinted for my brother.
I saw the walker trying to get a chunk off him, I sunk my knife into it's skull and let out a huge sigh of relife. I knelt down to Blake's height and he wrapped his arms around my neck. The tears began falling down his cheeks, he just sobbed into my shoulder before the sound of the undead made me move. They had cornered us, my knife wasn't gonna do the trick and I didn't want more of those thing to come. This was it. Blake was clutching my leg whilst burying his face into my side. "Get down!" shouted a rough, very military sounding voice. I pulled Blake down and a shotgun started going off. Two minutes later, all the freaks were dead and I was left looking at a very handsome individual. "Y'all ok?" he asked and I nodded. The stranger helped me to my feet and I helped Blake up. "Name's Officer Shane Walsh." he said putting his hand out, I shook it and said "Ava Jones and this in my little brother, Blake." Shane smiled at us and studied my weapons. "Looks like you've been at this a while." Shane said smirking at me, "yeah well, when the dead are trying to eat you, it's a different story." I said causing him to chuckle. "Come on, I've got a group not far from here. At the old rock quarry." Shane explained.
Finally, other people. We began walking when Blake fell to the ground clutching his ankle. "Blake? What wrong?" I asked, "it hurts." he replied pointing at his ankle. Shane marched over and put Blake on to his back. "You holdin' on?" he asked Blake, "yes sir." Blake replied resting his head on Shane's back. I smiled my thanks to Shane and we made our way to this rock quarry. "So your a cop?" I asked following Shane back through the woods, "was. Now I just try keep people alive." he replied. "That's a dificult job nowadays, y'know?" I said, "yeah but someone's gotta do it." Shane replied. "Is there other kids in your group Mr Walsh?" Blake asked, Shane smiled and took a breath. "Yeah, we got a little boy. A bit older than you but he's a good guy. His name's Carl. Then we got Sophia, she's the same age as Carl. There's a couple other kids, all older than you but you can still join in." Shane explained and Blake smiled. We emeraged from the bushes into the old rock quarry. It looked like they'd set up shop a long time ago. A RV set up with a look out on top, tents scattered around and two main fire pits at the center of camp. "You can dump your stuff in ma tent." said Shane leading me over to were most of the tents were set up.
