jae hated him. he just stood there with his back pressed up against his car, not giving a care. his fingers brought the lit cigarette up to his lips and allowed him to take a long drag.

his head tilted back and blew the smoke. it curled upwards, through his black hair, around his pierced ears, and against his exposed throat. the music that blasted out of his cranked car could be heard all the way from where jae was sitting. he recognized it as the scorpions.

jae swallowed, feeling the sensation slide down his dry throat like a knife. he didn't like the effect the boy had on him, it was an uncomfortable feeling that he was neither familiar with nor welcomed.

as he sat outside, waiting for his ride, running his fingertips gently back and forth along the spine of his book, jae realized why the boy carried the atmosphere that he did.

there was an aura surrounding the dark boy that made chills run down the arch of his spine and the curves of his arms. it was a blackened spirit that followed him like a lingering rain cloud, bearing down on everyone around him, suffocating them with the smoke he breathed.

it was crushing down on jae's back like an anvil. it was a weight on him that rendered his legs useless and his mind clouded. he hated it, therefore he hated the boy.

said boy's eyes closed as he lay his back against his car. he looked tired, as if he hadn't slept well in several days. his lips parted slightly, blowing some more smoke out. the headphones cradling his neck glinted silver beneath the pearly sky and the walkman tucked in his pocket caught jae's eye. jae wondered the point of owning a walkman if he was just going to obnoxiously blast music out of his car. still, the song fit him.

jae wanted to know what else he listened to and what about it made him enter his own world like this. he had never experienced that with music before but he wanted to.

he wanted to feel his mind leave his boring reality. he wanted to feel something other than the gray he felt every day. he wanted that and someone to feel it with, someone to understand.

in the midst of his thoughts, he hadn't realized the boy had picked up his bag and left. jae's eyebrows perked up in confusion as he whipped around, attempting to see where he had gone.

the boy didn't seem to be around and he was ready to give up and set his head back down on the table when he appeared before him.

he was on the opposite side of the table, clutching his bag against his side and staring at him. jae's eyes widened at the sight of his figure.

"yes?" he asked, proud of himself for not stuttering underneath the boy's gaze. he didn't know why he said it, it was kind of a reflexive thing.

"ride?" the looming boy asked. as he spoke, his eyes quickly flickered from jae's eyes to the collar bones protruding from his shirt.

jae choked a bit on his words, clearly having misheard him. his eyes widened and averted from the boy's.

"excuse me?" he said.

"do you need a ride?" the boy asked. jae's ears became hot with embarrassment as he realized that the boy had only been offering him a ride home.
