Chapter Two: Fancy Dinners At Dusk

I slightly opened the front door and put my head through. No one.

I cautiously pushed the door open a bit more and slipped through. I then tiptoed up our wooden stairs, into my bedroom.

I closed the door and sighed in relief.

"Would you like to explain to me where you were?"

I turned around in surprise and came face to face with my mother. And here I was thinking I was safe.

"MARCIA ANASTASIA LORRINGTON!" She screamed at me.

"Just look at you. You look disgusting. What is that on your dress?! And just look at your heels! They're filthy!" She continued.

That turned my attention right to my clothes. Well... She wasn't wrong.

My dress had turned from the nice aquamarine to dusty and brown. The hem of the dress was covered in dirt and my heels had mud stuck to the bottom.

"Honestly Marcia. I don't know what we're going to do with you..."

My mother then continued to go on about how I was being disrespectful and blah blah blah.

So I kind of blanked out half way through and started to ignore her.

"Marcia. Marcia. Are you listening to me?" She said shaking my arm.

"Hmm."

"Go and clean yourself up." She said, in a disgusted tone.

She then stalked out of my room.

I fell back onto my bed and sighed.

After I cleaned myself up I lay on my bed for a while. Thinking about Ulysses.

His deep voice captured me and the way he spoke about his town enchanted me.

I desperately wanted to see and talk to him again but I knew that my mother was watching me closely and wouldn't let me out of her eye sight.

I could almost bet that she was still suspicious about where I had been.

After all she didn't get an answer the first time she asked and she was not one to let something like this go.

My thoughts were once again disturbed by a large piece of material hitting my face.

"Get up and get dressed your going out tonight and you need to look your best."

I heard my mother's voice from under the material, and as usual she was ordering me to do something.

"Marcia, I hope you know that when I say I want something done, I mean immediately."

At that I sat up off the bed, while pushing the dress to the floor.

My mother quickly scooped it up and examined it to see if it was okay.

She then shot me a scornful look. Telling me that the dress was not ruined but she was still angry at me for being "so disrespectful to it".

"Go shower, brush and tie your hair neatly and then put on the dress, quickly now we don't have all day." My mother added, pushing me into my ensuite.

"I don't want to hear a word about your opinion on the engagement tonight." She snapped before closing the ensuite door.

I stripped and walked into the shower and then closed the shower door. I turned on the tap and hot water immediately started to run down my back.
