Chapter One
Harry’s flight from London had landed in Calgary at around 2pm. After checking himself into a hotel, he drove up to the University. He knew that Crystal’s best friends, Sheyenne and Rebecca, lived there, while Crystal lived alone in an apartment near the campus. He was grateful for that, because he had a plan to surprise Crystal. Harry could hardly wait to see her. It had been about three months since the last time they were together. Since Harry and Crystal were both always so busy, Harry with his singing career and Crystal with her veterinary studies, he hardly got to see her at all. Harry knew that Crystal missed him as much as he missed her, and therefore, he didn’t tell her that he was coming to Calgary. He had a surprise planned for her instead.
He pulled into the parking lot and marched his way up to Sheyenne and Rebecca’s room. As they opened the door, they were surprised. They didn’t expect their best friend’s boyfriend to be knocking on their door at four o’clock in the afternoon, but they greeted him warmly and welcomed him inside.
“Well, Harry? What brings you here?” Sheyenne asked, and Rebecca followed with, “Yeah, and how come Crystal isn’t with you? Does she even know you’re here?”
Harry smiled, “No, actually, she doesn’t. That’s why I’m here. I want to surprise her, but I need your help. I need you to call her and ask her to join you for dinner tonight, and that you’ll pick her up at seven o’clock at her place.”
Rebecca frowned. “Wait a sec, we can’t go out tonight. It’s Jason’s birthday party.”
“Is Crystal going to Jason’s party?” Harry asked, now starting to fear that his plans will be foiled.
“No, she’s against college parties, remember?” Sheyenne reminded Harry. “Yeah, that’s Crystal for ya, always a buzz-kill.” Rebecca chimed in. They all laughed together.
“Well,” Harry said, “It’s okay that you guys aren’t free tonight. Your call is only a ruse to make her believe that she’s going to dinner with you, and that’s when I pick her up instead and surprise her.”
The two girls looked at each other and smiled. “That is the sweetest thing in the world. She’ll be so happy to see you!” Sheyenne was genuinely excited for her friend. She had to admit that she envied her, since she had such an amazing boyfriend, but she was also really happy for her, because Harry did everything in his power to make her feel special, and Crystal deserved a guy like that.
“I’ll call her right now,” Rebecca jumped up and dialled on the phone. Butterflies fluttered in Harry’s stomach. It was killing him that Crystal was only minutes away from where he was standing, and he had to wait another three hours to see her.
Rebecca waited until she heard Crystal’s voice come through the phone, “Hello?”
“Hey girl, it’s Becca.” She answered. Harry was relieved that she was able to reach her. He was increasingly worried about it not being able to work out because of a simple mishap like Crystal not answering the phone.
Crystal was sitting on the couch in her house watching some TV. She casually answered with, “Hey, Becca, what’s up?”
“Well, Sheyenne and I are going out tonight for dinner, and we were wondering if you wanted to join us.”
Crystal paused before answering. “I thought you guys said you were going to Jason’s party tonight.”
Rebecca was a quick thinker, so she replied smoothly, “We were, but we changed our minds. Anyways, are you up for it? We’d really love a girl’s night, you know, dresses, fine dining, the works.”
“I dunno, I have classes tomorrow morning, I probably shouldn’t go out tonight.” Crystal answered.
“Oh, c’mon, please! We’ll be back in time for you to get sleep. Just for dinner. Please? It wouldn’t be the same without you.” Rebecca pleaded. Harry’s heart raced as he figured Crystal had said no. He was hoping he could trust Rebecca’s persuasive skills to convince her to go.
Crystal thought about it briefly, and then finally said, “Alright, I suppose I need to eat.”
Rebecca smiled, giving Harry a thumbs-up. He grinned with joy. His plan was working! “Great! We’ll pick you up at your place at seven.”
“Sweet! I’ll be ready! Love you, girl!” Crystal said, and hung up once Rebecca returned the goodbye.
Crystal had wondered to herself why they insisted so much on going out, but she didn’t think too much about it. Sometimes, girls just need a night out. She jumped into the shower to get herself ready for tonight’s dinner.
Rebecca placed the phone on its charger and smiled at Harry. “There, my work here is done.”
Harry couldn’t express his gratitude. “Thank you so much for helping me out, you guys are the best.”
“Hey, anything for our girl,” Sheyenne stated and Rebecca nodded her agreement. “You should probably get going, you’ve got a big night ahead of you!"
“Yes, I certainly do! Thanks so much again, I couldn’t have done this without you ladies.” Harry bid his farewells to the girls and left for his rental car. He was glad there was no one around to photograph him, since he didn’t want Crystal finding out he was here over the internet. He played it safe by keeping it a secret from the world so that Crystal wouldn’t stumble upon the news on her Twitter feed.
He drove back to his hotel and slipped into his room to prepare himself for the greatest night of his life.
