Chapter Nine
"I'm such an idiot," Liam murmured through tears. "He'll never talk to me again."
Louis continued to rub his back in efforts to comfort him. "He'll come around. You were just trying to help. Someday he'll understand that." He gave Liam a friendly smile.
Looking up, he saw Niall's face was scrunched as he fought hard to keep it together. It seemed like he was trying not to explode. He shifted his eyes to Zayn, who had his hand over his face, clinging to the hope that he'd wake up from this nightmare.
Louis then made eye contact with Anne. A wave of sympathy hit him as he saw Harry's mother, standing powerless and grief-stricken. Nothing she could say or do could help her child. She couldn't do her job. She couldn't protect him. And it killed her.
He couldn't believe this was all happening...to him, to the band, and to his best friend. The thought of losing Eleanor made him physically sick. He couldn't imagine how Harry must feel.
He grew increasingly worried about Harry as seconds ticked by. Hadn't they just discussed about not allowing him to be left alone, in case anything happened? He stood up slowly. "I should probably go make sure he's alright."
Everyone nodded their acknowledgement of his words, but was clearly preoccupied with their own thoughts and emotions.
Louis walked down the hallway to Harry's room, where he turned the doorknob and allowed the door to open slowly. "Harry?" he called as he peeked his head around the door.
Harry was standing on the edge of his bed, a cord wrapped around his neck.
He was ready to jump.
Lou's eyes grew in panic as he stepped into the room and put his hands up in front of him as if to try and reason with his best friend. "Harry, mate, you don't wanna do this."
Harry's eyes were red and swollen, and his features were defeated. He was staring blankly at the wall in front of him, preparing for the end.
Louis was frozen in place. He was afraid any sudden movements would make him jump. "Harry, listen to me. This won't solve anything. We need you, okay? We can't make it through this without you. But together we can make it through. You need to trust me, Harry. Do you trust me?"
Harry continued to stare at the wall. "I can't do this anymore."
"Yes, you can. We're here. I'M here. We'll help you, Harry, you gotta trust me on this." Louis could feel his pulse raging as he held his breath, awaiting Harry's next words.
Closing his eyes, Harry whispered, "I can't live without her."
"She hasn't left, mate! She lives in you, in your heart, your memory. She'll always be with you. Don't do this, please. This isn't what Crystal would want."
Harry's chin quivered as he began to sob. Louis stepped forward slowly, approaching him with caution. "Just come down and we can talk about this, alright?"
After a few seconds, Harry decided to take his best friend's advice and reached up to loosen the cord from his neck. He slumped onto the bed, utterly drained of any strength. Louis sat next to him and wrapped his arms around Harry in silence.
Crystal's death was bad enough. Thinking of losing Harry as well was too much. Louis let all his emotion pour out of him as he clung to his closest friend, the one person in the world that he couldn't afford to lose.
Harry could've been dead. He could've ignored his best friend's pleas. Louis could've been too late. He couldn't think about it. He couldn't imagine a world without Harry.
As they held each other, broken and crying, they realized how much they needed one another, and how precious their friendship was. It was as if nothing was more important. As long as they had each other to lean on, everything would be alright.
"We're gonna make it, Harry. You and me."
And, for the first time, Harry believed it.

Louis supported Harry as they stepped out of the room and made their way back to the group. They were exhausted, and no amount of sleep could ever relieve them of it.
Harry was so grateful he had a friend like Louis. He had just saved his life. And he promised that the incident would stay between the two of them, as long as Harry swore he'd never try it again. And he knew there was no need, because Louis was right. It wouldn't solve anything. And it certainly wasn't what Crystal would want.
As they entered the dining room, everyone breathed a silent sigh of relief. They were glad Harry was okay.
Harry stopped in front of the table, preparing to speak. After a few seconds of hesitation, Louis patted his back and smiled at him encouragingly. He could do this.
Everyone was quiet as they awaited his words. "I was thinking...about what happened. When Crystal left, I was certain I died along with her. I felt empty, and alone, and scared... I-I wasn't sure I'd be able to make it..." He paused and gathered himself before continuing, "But, now I realize...I still have all of you. And I'm so grateful for it. Because I know that as long as you're here," He smiled at everyone through teary eyes, "I'll be okay."
And as his mother and band mates surrounded him in a group hug, Harry felt at peace. He'd been through the worst, and now, it could only get better.
