Prologue

Keeping sane. Sanity was, has been, and always will be the most important thing to me. Maintaining an adequate grip on even the most basic concepts of my life, ever-changing as they may be, was always a pretty simple thing to manage. As a coping mechanism for anxiety in unfamiliar situations, I'd purposefully make myself aware of three main things happening around me to ground myself- this usually calmed me. Usually. But standing here, trying to make sense of the flames that spontaneously erupted around me in the pitch-black night, the dark, tar-like substance splatter that accompanied the supernova blast not five feet in front of me, and the impact of what might have been a very unfortunately-timed suicide jump- well, sanity hadn't proved to be the most difficult thing to harness...that was, until about exactly
right
now.

Because,
1. There was a being in front of me, who had fallen from the sky above and created the tar-filled crater barely 2 seconds ago
2. This being was a mildly (read: majorly) attractive female, and
3. She was absolutely, without a trace of doubt, dead.

But, I realized as I stared over the fallen body, something isn't quite right. I pondered a little longer, my eyes not leaving the figure...when it dawned on me. In that exact moment, the girl's eyes opened ever so slightly, and she let out a small moan of pain as she shifted in the dirt.

I gasped in shock as she slowly awoke, unmoving from my stance above her.

Because, this...this was no girl. As my eyes traveled to the prominent shoulder blades and the thick, feathery black wings that sprouted from them, I realized:

This is no angel, either.
