The machine beside me beeped, and beeped, and beeped. I looked at the cord that was in my wrist, and over to my mom. Her eyes were teary and red. "Momma, why're you crying?"
"Oh, its nothing sweetie, I just got something in my eye." She rubbed at it furiously. "Would you like me to read to you?" She sniffled. "I brought your favorites." I nodded, my head felt light. "Which one would you like sweetheart?" I looked at the selection. She had Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and the Three Blind Mice.
"Little Red Riding Hood, momma." She nodded, opening the slim picture book with shaky hands. The nurse, a nice looking lady, walked over with a new plastic bag, and changed out my old one. She put a hand on my head, where my hair used to be. She left, crying. "What's wrong Miss Rosie?" I asked, watching her leave the room.
"It's alright honey." She sniffled, and cleared her throat, putting on her best smile. "How about we start the story, okay?"
"Okay." I said, playing with the needle and its cord. It was making me feel dizzy and tired. I leaned back, deciding it was nothing. I pulled the cover under my chin, and blinked hard. It was getting difficult to keep my eyes open.
"Once Upon a time..." My mother began. Her voice became distant, and the rest of the words became a thick blur as the world of the room went dark.
