I woke up on a cold September day. School starts in an hour, and I start my daily routine. I throw my caramel hair back into a messy bun and throw on my favorite shirt: my 1D tour merch that I got from them coming to my city. I pull on my ripped black jeans and catch a glimpse of my piercing blue eyes in the mirror.
I open the door and walk out and see my brother Calum walk to the kitchen. I follow him there and see that Dad made us breakfast. In the year since mom died, Dad has really stepped up his supportive game. Oh, and there was one extra plate laid out.
Coming in from the front door, Ashton took off his winter hat and shook his delicious hair to perfection. I nearly drooled before getting completely red and putting my face in my plate of breakfast. He came in with his usual goofy smile, accompanied by two dimples.
I grab my piece of toast and my tumbler and start walking my way to the door.
"Iris, come back and eat your breakfast!" I hear my dad yell.
"I'm not hungry!" I reply. In reality I couldn't stand being so close to Ashton and not show my old feelings for him. I grab my backpack and attempt to head out. I look at the floor to avoid Ashton's face but end up bumping into him anyways. I instinctively snap my head up to apologize and my eyes lock with his. I see his old self in there-- but I also see the shock, pain, and disappointment too. I look back at the ground and head out to walk to school.
I walk 4 houses down to meet up with my best friend Nicole. She's beautiful. Blonde hair, green eyes, perfect body. Everything that I'm not. Nicole walks out of her house with her hair curled and a full face on, just like she does everyday. Her brother Luke walks out with her. Her mom insists on her walking with him since he's 2 years younger than us and it's his first day of high school.
"Awww. Hi Luke!" I said. He shyly looks up and waves back. Adorable. Nicole urges us to hurry up because, not only is she hot, she's super smart too and cannot be late. Total loser. But on our rush to school we can't catch a break and run into Abby and Jessica. Total bitches. They're the head cheerleaders and somehow also the co presidents of the student body. They can put on an act for anyone yet remain stone cold at heart.
We manage to pass them without them causing a scene and split up to go to our lockers. I start going up the stairs when i see Michael at the top of the stairs. We've been close friends since middle school, and unlike Ashton, we stayed close and drama free.
"Hey Michael. I have to talk to you about something later. What period do you have lunch this semester?" I ask. We both have the same lunch! Phew. I'm so happy, because last year I sat all alone while my friends had lunch together the next period. "Alright, I'll talk to you in a little bit!"
I head to my locker since it's almost time for class to start when I lay my eyes on him. Ashton. In the locker next to mine. Why could he have moved lockers?
"Hey Iris!" he says to me excitedly with his adorable smile and his irresistible hazel eyes looking into mine.
"Hi Ashton," I say hesitantly.
"What's your first period?" he asks.
"Physics."
"Me too! We can walk together," he says.
Great, I think to myself.
On our way he starts talking about some dumb shit. I can pay attention most of the time, but my mind is really just a mess today. Jet lag? More like first-day-of-school lag. This is going to take some getting used to...
We finally make it to the classroom, and I see Nicole already sitting at a table in the back of class. Thank God she's in here, because I'd fail without her. I take a seat next to her and notice that my twin brother walks through the door. He immediately starts waling toward our table with Ashton following closely behind.
"H-Hi Nicole," Calum mutters nervously.
"Calum, I think our table's full..." I mutter.
"I wasn't gonna ask to sit here. I was actually gonna ask something else..." he whispers so that the class doesn't hear. I immediately go into panic mode, and Nicole turns red. This is not happening.
"You-", I begin to say, but I know I'll regret what will come out afterwards. I start chugging my water rapidly from my bottle to stop myself. But of course, with the worst possible timing, my throat decides that the water will go down the wrong pipe. I start coughing and choking up a storm.
"Are you choking on water?" Ashton asks before laughing. Unable to respond, and making a fool of myself more, the whole class starts to join in on the comedy fest that is my life.
My throat clears up sooner than expected, and before I know it I spit out "Yeah. I'm just compensating because, I mean, you never were able to make me do that..."
"That was a horrible fucking insult haha," a random kid from the class shouts. Mr. Jones got back from the bathroom just in time to conveniently miss everything that just transpired, but witness the class laughing at me. He tells the class to simmer down and starts writing his rules on the whiteboard. Ashton got up and sat at a table with his other friends from the soccer team.
"Would you wanna go out for coffee after school today?" Calum finally asked Nicole. She looks at me unsure of what to respond, but I'm lost in my head, looking at Ashton and thinking about how attractive he is. He has such an affect on me. I also am in my head thinking of reasons why I thought it was okay to say that stupid shit in front of the whole class.
Nicole nudges me with her elbow. I snap out of my trance and am met with another awkward situation that I'm in control of. Fuck.
There's a silent pause, and Calum says "It's okay if you don't want to. I-"
"Yes, what time?" Nicole cuts him off. I look at her in shock.
"What the fuck..." I whisper to myself.
"Great! I'll pick you up at five," Calum says before walking over to Ashton's table. As my eyes peered toward that side of the room, I caught Ashton staring at me. As soon as our eyes glared at one another, his bolted downward. Fuck. This is going to be a rough semester, especially starting the day off with him. But wait, what just happened?
"Bitch, are you going on a date with my brother?"
"Looks like it," Nicole responds.
"Jesus Christ, today is awful," I say to myself. Apparently Nicole heard me, because she spits out ,
"If you had a problem with it, then why didn't you say anything?" At first, I didn't know if she was serious. I cracked a smile, but her face remained stoic. The tension between us grew; you could cut it with a knife. "Why not?" she repeated.
"You know what? I don't even care. Do whatever you want," I retorted.
"I hope you all had a nice summer break," Mr. Jones said to the class, silencing our argument. I guess I'll just hang out with Michael later anyway. I heard Nicole whispering, trying to talk, but I wasn't listening. I didn't care. I mean, who is the winner here? It's a lose-lose situation regardless of what either of us does, so there is not point in fighting about it.
"I'm done with this," I whisper, and we stop talking for the day.
Before I know it, the school day is over, so I head home and get ready for the plans I made with Michael earlier.
