"Breakfast is ready, Miss Ophelia!" calls one of the maids from downstairs.
I've been body guarding Charles for one month now but I'm still no closer to finding the killers leader.
Not to mention how trapped I feel just by staying here. The luxury in the mansion sickens me, there is cutlery made out of the finest silver when many don't even have food to eat. I see beggars lingering outside sometimes, the house policy is to turn them away, though I try to help as much as I can. I just feel powerless watching as the food everyone here throws out is food I would have died to eat only a little while ago.
My impression of Charles has gradually improved over time, after the night of the dance, I think he respects me more.
"What are you planning to do today?" he asks me at breakfast
"No idea" I say "it's not like I have any planned assassinations to do" and laugh
He smiles but looks almost sad "you shouldn't have to kill all the time, Ophelia, why don't you go to the library today?"
I shrug "killing is what I do" I tell him quietly "Someone needs to do it" then because the air is feeling too tense I change topic "Library sounds good though"
"Great" he says and smiles
"I can accompany you" says James who has just entered the room
"Really?" I say "thanks James!"
"No problem" he says with a smile
Charles' face goes expressionless "I can show you the way of you want" he says
"No need" I smile "please don't worry"
"Fine" he says and leaves the room sullenly
"Did I do something wrong?" I ask James, as soon as Charles left
"Hmmm" he grins "I don't think so"
We enter the library, although library is not even a good enough word for it, it's like a castle built of books.
Velvet armchairs placed with quilted cushions in all of the nooks and crannies provide the perfect reading space. I'm sure I could get lost amongst the endless expanse of gorgeous old fashioned books."It's beautiful" I breathe
James smiles, his fingers gently running along the spine of a book.
'Far from the madding crowd'"My favourite book" he says giving it to me "I'm sure you'd like it"
"Thank you" I reply as I hold the book which is decorated in elaborate artistic patterns.
"No thank you" he responds
"For what?"
"Ever since you've come here" he says slowly "this house has been a happier place"
"You're flattering me" I laugh
"I'm not that great"Suddenly he pulls me close to him, I can hear his heart beat quickening as he says "I think you're amazing " and leans in
I pull away quickly "don't " I say quietly
"You don't know what I'm capable of""Ophelia" he says as I run off
"I'm sorry"
