Adar had never felt so pleased with himself in his life; Sylvia Bywater herself had said that he had potential. NOW he could prove to his family that he wasn't the failure they all said he was. This was his chance. A chance to prove his father wrong.

And he would relish every minute of it.

"What are you smiling about?" he heard Jin ask him.

"Why does it matter to you?" Adar retorted.

"Because when you smile, it means you're up to something, and when you're up to something, it means you want ME to get involved. And when I get involved, I'm usually the one who ends up in trouble."

 "Only, because you get caught."

Jin shook his head as they walked through the gardens to the lunch hall. "But, truly, I want to know. We ARE friends, after all."

Adar snorted, "That doesn't mean I'll let you in on every detail in my life."

A flicker of hurt flashed across Jin's face, and for a moment, Adar wondered if he had been too harsh. Guilt threatened to prick at him, yet he pushed it deep down, along with all his other emotions.

Bloody stupid emotions.

"I have to go." Jin said quietly when Adar made no move to apologize .

"Suit yourself. I know you'll be back." he said, surprised when Jin's face hardened.

 "Maybe I won't be."

And with that, the other boy stormed off, leaving Adar to silently and metaphorically KICK HIMSELF.

This was bloody fantastic! WHY did he have to mess everything up like an absolute twit? Jin was the one boy at Adalain Academy who didn't avoid him like the plague and now Adar had gone and ruined it all.

Maybe, just once, he would like to have friends.

Sighing, he turned away from his original course to the lunch hall and instead made his way around to the back of the mansion, the shadow of the great house looming over him and casting him in a pale darkness.

This was were all the bad boys congregated, and this is where he should be. He DESERVED this. He deserved to be alone... Of course, he could always go back and apologize to Jin.

Scoffing aloud at the notion, Adar shook his head.

Why, the very idea of admitting that he was in the wrong was absolutely absurd! Mostly because Adar was never in the wrong.

Yet just when he thought he was alone and prepared to spent the rest of the afternoon that way, he sensed a presence behind him and turned around to see Kyrin and two of his friends standing there, glaring at him.

Grinning in his most charming manner, he ran a hand through his thick, dark hair. "Come to enjoy the view? I hear the back wall of the mansion is very nice this time of year."

"Don't be bloody stupid," Kyrin hissed, "Since when did you start helping Asta Featherstone with his magic?"

 "Wouldn't YOU like to know."

Adar didn't even flinch when Kyrin pinned him up against the stone wall of the mansion. For, this was the sort of thing that did not scare him in the slightest; mostly because his older brothers —and sisters too— did this to him all the time.

He would not let the other boy see him frightened.

"I won't ask you again, prince," Kyrin ground his fists deeper into Adar's chest, "DOES Asta have magic?"
