Tutoring me was not easy, I honestly felt bad for him.
"All I'm asking of you is to read the words in Spanish!!" He shouted.
"I don't know the words in Spanish!!" I argued.
"Okay, read these in Spanish, they are called cognates" he wrote more down on a piece of paper.
"Des-crib-ir" I looked at him not amused.
"Well that's the first Spanish word you actually said so I'm making progress" he rolls his eyes.
"It's 6:00, I want to go home now" I grabbed my bag and put my shoes back on, leaving his room. I walked down the stairs to be enveloped with noise. Yes, almost four hours after school ended and I only said one spanish word.
Josie was running around the kitchen island, playing the ukulele, which she didn't know how to play, Delilah was on a scooter chasing after her, both of them laughing like a crazed little girl that sends you running. Then you see Vivian on the couch watching tv like nothing was even happening.
The door suddenly opened and in walked a boy, younger than me. He looked a lot like Ethan so I was guessing this was Connor and he was just now getting off work.
"Who's this?" He questioned looking at me.
"This is Maddie, Ethan's girlfriend" Vivian answers, still looking at the tv.
"What? No, he's my tutor" I shook my head.
"Oh right, sorry, it's just easier to call you that" she cringes apologetically. I look back at the boy and he just laughs.
"What?" I question, why in the world is he laughing? There's literally nothing funny that was said.
"Sorry, are you leaving now?" He asks changing the subject.
"Yes, I've been here for about four hours" I concluded and walked to the door last him.
I waved goodbye and left.
"Hey!" He calls out and shut the door behind him, causing me to turn around.
"I can drive you home" he offered.
I didn't want him to waste his time, I liked walking, I also don't like being a burden to anyone.
"No, I want to walk, it's okay" I gave him a small smile.
He jogged up to me, squeezing in between me and the curb so I wasn't close to the road. I smiled softly at the thought.
"Seriously, Ethan I will be fine, you don't have to walk me home" I told him sincerely.
"Would you just let me be a gentleman" he rolled his eyes as he walked with me.
I stayed silent as he walked with me, I honestly just wanted to be alone. But I didn't want to hurt his feelings so I went with it.
He's only being nice.
It really wasn't a long walk, he lived pretty close to me, around 10 or 15 minutes.
We didn't talk at all, I wasn't the only one silent and awkward silence is nerve racking to me so I had to break it 2 minutes in.
"So... where are your parents?" I tried making conversation.
"My mom is at work and my dad doesn't live in my house anymore" he answers.
"Can I ask what happened?" I didn't want to intrude, I didn't need to know.
"Um, he got addicted to drugs when I was 12 and my mom kicked him out, I'm still in touch with him though, he's still in my life, it's not a big deal" he shrugged, I could tell something bothered him though, I decided against asking about it, we didn't know each other well enough.
"What about your parents?" He asked me back.
"Well, they are both alive and well, they just are almost never around, they always leave" I look at the ground awkwardly, it wasn't that serious but sometimes I wish they didn't leave.
"What do you mean, leave?" He furrows his eyebrows.
"Well my moms work hours are crazy, it's never a consistent schedule and my dad works every week day for ten hours a day, then when they are home they go out, to friends, to play poker, karaoke, restaurants." I explain.
"Oh, I wish my mom would leave, she never takes a break and being a single mom with six kids is hell" he sighs.
"I bet" I laughed.
"So your home alone all day" he smirks flirtatiously.
"No, Max is home, he and I are really close, he is always there for me" I turn him down.
"What about your other family members?" He asked.
"I have a huge family, my great grandma had 14 children and they had children and had children and my other one had 5 children and ya know. My little cousin and my grandfather are the closest to me" I can't believe I'm just gonna keep talking and talking, I need to shut up, I'm probably boring him. My life isn't interesting for a popular kid. I'm plain.
"I don't have anybody out of my family, none of my parents had siblings, my grandmother died and her husband is uninvolved. On the other side, they just live super far away." He explained.
"I have a question" I looked at him.
"Well ask it" he scoffed.
"Why are you so comfortable talking to me about personal stuff, we barely know each other?" I frowned.
"Your personality so far is very trustworthy and your an easy person to talk to" he shrugs. I smile lightly at that, he doesn't mind me.
He is very different than I expected him to be, I was thinking busy, rude, self centered popular but he's quite the opposite. He is fun to be around. Plus he isn't as flirtatious as I expected. A little bit it's tolerable. I surprisingly don't mind it.
We turned the corner and I saw my house, the second one on the block.
"Thank you for walking me home, very kind of you" I smiled and waved.
"Your house, Wednesday?" He asked walking backwards.
"Sure" I nodded.
Walking inside at 6:20 I see Max in the kitchen, pouring apple juice. My dad should be here any minute, this is the time he comes home.
"So... how was your tutoring session?" Max questioned, not happily.
"Very bad, I can't speak Spanish, but it could have been worse, he could have been rude" I answered shrugging.
"He's not a bad guy he just tends to not care for girls feelings." He commented.
Max wasn't like all those other popular guys, he had a girlfriend name Tara, he's been dating her since he was a freshman. Tara is popular too but not the most popular. What I mean is that he is committed, he doesn't fool around and he's a nice and weird guy.
"He hasn't acted that way to me yet" I looked confused.
"Don't worry, he's my friend, he wouldn't dare do anything to you" Max shrugged, I guess he has cooled down. I gave him a small smile as he went up the stairs with his juice. Realizing that my dad should be home by now I call his phone.
"Hey dad" I greet.
"Hey Maddie, how was school?" He asked.
"It was okay, when are you going to be home?" I asked.
"Oh, I'm headed to a basketball game, I'll be home later tonight" he told me and I frowned.
"Oh, I'll see you later then, goodbye" I hung up.
You're always at a basketball game.
