The day afterwards was pretty normal. Kaitlin came over, but we couldn't stop smiling at each other. I was pretty sure that Delilah noticed something because she kept on looking over at us. Nothing changed since last night, surprisingly. Kaitlin went home right afterwards, since her parents and my parents would've gotten suspicious.
We were watching a movie in the living room, while Delilah was in the kitchen making popcorn for us. She brought it over and smiled. "Enjoy," she told us and walked away to her phone, probably to call Andrew. I pulled a soft blanket over our legs and ate a piece of popcorn. Kaitlin smiled at me. "This popcorn is really good," I said, trying to break the awkward silence. The movie kept on playing in the background, but we didn't pay any attention to it. Kaitlin leaned in, and I leaned in...
And then Andrew walked in the door. We broke apart and pretended to watch the movie, even though I didn't have any idea what was going on. Stupid Andrew. Why did Delilah have to call him at that exact moment? I could hear Delilah laugh at something Andrew said. Kaitlin's phone buzzes. It's her mom, apparently she forgot Thomas' birthday.
"How could you forget his birthday," I ask after she tells me. She looks at me with a face that tells me that I should know. Oh... "I'll come with you, if you want." She smiles.
"Delilah," Kaitlin calls. "Ash is coming with me to celebrate my brother's birthday."
"Kay," Delilah calls back. Andrew laughs at something Delilah must've said and we leave.
Kaitlin's mom opens the door right before Kaitlin puts her key in the lock. She ushers us inside and to the living room where Thomas is sitting on the ground with a little birthday hat on. He runs and hugs Kaitlin pauses and then hugs me. I smile and hug him back. When he lets go Kaitlin's smiling at me, I smile back and we sit down on the couch. Thomas opens his presents, including one we'd picked up last minute. Kaitlin's mom goes to get the cake from the kitchen and we help Thomas pick up the wrapping and tissue paper off the ground. Kaitlin's mom comes back with a marble cake with chocolate frosting and 7 candles on top. Thomas smiles widely as the cake is put on the coffee table in front of him. We sing happy birthday and Thomas blows out his candles.
"What did you wish for," Kaitlin's dad asks.
"I wished that Kaitlin would be happy with Ash forevers," Thomas says happily. There's silence until Kaitlin starts sobbing. "What's wrong Katie? Was I not supposed to wish for that?" Kaitlin shakes her head and smiles.
"Nothing, Thomas," Kaitlin says and goes to sit beside him. "That was really sweet." She hugs him tightly until he can't breathe and then let's go. He laughs and runs over to me and hugs me. I hug him back and look over his shoulder to see Kaitlin smiling. He lets go and laughs. Kaitlin and I play with him for a bit and then go in the backyard. There's a bench swing and Kaitlin guides me over to it. Her backyard has a huge tree in the middle and flower beds surrounding it and the swing hangs from the tree. When we sit down she turns to me and says "I believe we were interrupted earlier." I smile as she pulls me into a kiss.
