»»» IT was easy for them both to quickly move on from the awkwardness, spending the next couple of hours discussing various theories about their predicament. But no matter how many times Lavender would put them back on track, they would somehow always find themselves talking about random topics such as who would win in a duel between Crabbe and Goyle. They had swiftly moved on to far more important subjects: snog, marry, stupefy.
"There is no way you would do that!" Fred exclaimed.
"Actually, you're right. I would stupefy them both. I'd snog and marry Dean," she added with an afterthought.
"Pretty sure that's cheating," he shook his head. "That's the guy Gin dated right?"
Lavender raised an eyebrow before shrugging.
"Oh come off it. You knew exactly who was dating who, it was kind of your thing," said Fred as he gave her a pointed look.
"My thing?" Lavender quipped back. She figured her reputation would be of no consequence to him since he had no reason to care whilst they were at school. The statement was believed not because of pity, but simply due to the truth it held.
"If someone even looked in the direction of someone else, I could put Galleons on you knowing about it. I'll bet you saw and heard so much crap at Hogwarts," Fred explained, stuffing his hands into his pockets.
"Yeah cause I couldn't keep my nose to myself. Always poking it where it didn't belong," she replied moodily, suddenly finding the cracks between the pavement slabs fascinating. It was easy for him to make sweeping statements and whilst she knew he didn't mean it nastily (or at least she needed to believe it), hearing his observations just ended up hitting far too close to home. But a part of her was tired of letting the comments get to her.
"Your turn. Umbridge, McGonagall and Bellatrix," she said, eyes daring to flicker up at him when she heard the sharp inhale that followed.
"That's not fair."
"Still think I was cheating?" said Lavender dryly, earning a laugh from him.
"Okay okay, I'll play nice. Deal?" Fred offered instead to which Lavender nodded gratefully. He scrunched his nose, eyes lighting up as he turned to her again. "Neville Longbottom, Cormac McLaggen... Harry Potter."
"Oh that's easy," Lavender said, not hiding the relief she felt at hearing the names. There was a lot of damage that could have been done had he said the wrong ones, but somehow he understood and respected her silent boundaries. "Hex McLaggen, snog Harry and marry Neville."
"Seriously? That is not how I thought you would answer. Weren't all the girls crazy about McLaggen?"
"No thanks," she snorted. "He is definitely good looking, but I had an unfortunate run in with him after Ro- after - at the end of sixth year," she continued, faltering again and inhaling deeply. It was frustrating to say the least that there were so many hidden traps that she could walk into without realising, but she blamed her habit of running away with her mouth.
