"To Bond.
The permanent courtship ritual that is performed between two people who know that they want to spend the rest of their lives together.
It is the ultimate mark of commitment, a tradition as old as the first people to settle on this earth.
It is binding, undoable, and uses an unbreakable magic that no one quite understands.
But Bonding will only work correctly if the two participants have true feelings for one another, and are prepared to protect each other at all costs.
This is why the term Bonding is thrown around so much now - people don't truly love each other anymore. They think it is a waste of time. Especially with the war - it is easier to merely marry the first person you are mildly attracted to, have children, and pass on the family name before you die."
Prince Shouto Todoroki remembered these words, spoken to him by his personal teacher a week before, as he strode up the dusty path to the small wooden house.
He pulled down the hood of his brown cloak, which he used to hide his royal clothing (he hadn't had time to change, and he couldn't risk being spotted in the farmers village or his father would come down on him hard), and stopped before the rickety door.
His mother should be out by now... Shoto thought to himself as he raised his fist. He knocked once. A pause. He knocked three times. Pause. Two more knocks.
That was the code, right? His bit his bottom lip nervously, tapping his foot, until he heard the usual pitter-patter of Izuku's wicker shoes against the floor as he ran excitedly towards the door.
Shoto grinned as it opened, and the freckled, glowing face of his lover appeared in the doorway.
Giggling, the green-haired boy swung the door open and jumped out, wrapping his arms around Shoto's neck.
They stared at each other deeply for a second, before their lips connected, and fireworks went off in Shoto's brain as he ran his fingers through Izuku's hair with one hand, his other arm grasping the other so tightly that he lifted Izuku up off of the ground.
They kissed passionately for a minute or two, before their faces parted and Shoto released Izuku's waist, both breathless from the heat and emotion that had emanated from the kiss.
The dual-haired boy smiled at the shorter one, and placed a light a kiss on the top of his nose.
Izuku grinned widely again, his face flushed with colour.'Come on!' He grabbed Shoto's hand and pulled him around the side of the house.
Both laughing simply with joy, the pair ran, hands tightly intertwined, into the wheat field that extended out behind the house.
The setting sun made the wheat shine golden, the light breeze causing it to sway delicately, and the two 17-year-old males ran overjoyed through the picture-perfect scene.
As they came to the end of the field, the grass extended downwards in front of them into a valley, the meadow below filled with waist-high grass and patches of yellow flowers.
The pair were stood at the top of the hill, and Izuku looked lovingly over at his soulmate, who was untying his cloak; he let it fall to the ground, along with his embroidered blue waistcoat and white button down, leaving the boy in a grey sleeveless undershirt and his beige slacks.
Shoto noticed the other boy watching him undress, and Izuku blushed as he was caught looking. He turned away, but Shoto moved towards him, and tipped his chin up with his thumb.
The blue-and-brown-eyed male held the wide-eyed boy's freckled cheek in his palm, and with his other hand traced the line of Izuku's cheekbone. His finger reached the side of Izuku's face, and traced down his neck, coming to rest on his collar bone.
Leaning down, his lips replaced his finger as Shoto left a trail of kisses on the boy's collar bone, his hands drifting down Izuku's arms to his wrists, where he hooked his fingers underneath Izuku's gloves and tugged them off with delicate intimacy.
Izuku draped his arms over Shoto's shoulders, who was now leaving marks underneath his chin, and let out a small whimpering sigh. And with that, his legs began to give way, and the pair fell onto their knees in the grass.
Now sucking on Izuku's jawline, Shoto fumbled at the buttons of his boyfriend's green waistcoat, and peeled it off of him, throwing it aside.
And as he undid the top button of Izuku's shirt, the green-haired boy leaned into Shoto's chest, and he fell backwards into the grass, Izuku following suit.
Now on top of the dual-haired boy, Izuku slammed his mouth onto Shoto's, clasping the sides of his face whilst Shoto held the back of Izuku's neck and head.
After a minute Shoto paused, and Izuku raised his head.
'What?'
Shoto ran his hand through the hair of the boy staring questioningly down at him.
'I love you, Izuku.'Izuku's confused expression broke into an adorable grin. This was the second time he'd said that in the entirety of their ongoing year-long [secret] relationship, the first being a couple weeks ago, the last time they'd seen each other.
And just like the first time, Izuku leant down and whispered, 'I love you too, Shoto', before connecting Shoto's now smiling mouth with his own once more.
They absorbed the familiar taste of one another, committing it to memory as their tongues intimately intertwined and their mouths worked together harmoniously, hands in hair, chest upon chest, and hearts beating as one as they held each other in the grass.
If only it could've lasted forever.
But they both knew it couldn't.
Not yet, anyway.
