Derry didn't feel like home at all to Chris. Not only because she had been moving from the place to place her entire life, but it was mostly because she felt like an outsider in a small town where everyone knew each other and had established relationships, and being the new kid didn't help either. It didn't really surprise her since she was used to being an outcast in every city and state that she moved too . Her, her mom Gwen, and her aunt Lizzie started moving the family from one place to another ever since Chris was 6. After her mom left her dad due to his alcoholic behavior, she decided to move to get a fresh new start with the assistance of Chris' aunt, But that became more and more frequent as Chris got older. She hated that her mom had to find one job after the next. She felt that because of how many times her and her family moved, she never really knew the true feeling of "home".
As Lizzie drove her to school, she was singing enthusiastically to Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody". "Oh my god, Aunt Liz", Chris sunk in her seat in embarrassment. "What? I love Whitney Houston", she said in a defensive, but cheerful tone. Lizzie was Gwen's adopted younger sister by only a few years. She was practically like a second parent to Chris since she helped raise her after her parents' split. Chris' grandparents were supportive, but it was mostly Lizzie who stepped in to help Gwen raise Chris and keep food on the table.
"I know, but there are people looking"
"You don't want people to know you have a fun aunt?", she jokingly asked which got a slight grin from Chris. "How come I don't see you hang out with any of the kids here?"
Chris shrugged, "I just prefer not to"
"Look, I know this has been like the millionth time we moved, but me and your mom just want you to make the best out of it and at least try to make some friends. Can you at least try to do that?".
"I'll try", she sighed, even though she knew she wasn't going to keep that promise.
Later that day came to and end, especially to the end of 7th grade. Chris didn't care to buy a yearbook because she didn't know if any of the names and faces of the kids in school would be memorable if her mom and aunt ever decided to move again. She walked in to the bathroom only to see Greta and a few other girls crowding around a bathroom stall. One held a dripping trash bag over it. "What the fuck are you looking at?", Greta asked. Chris had been picked on by Greta and her clique since she started attending Derry Middle, and she was already anticipating for that day's latest torment. Before she could respond, Greta decided that her and the girls should leave. Probably that day was just not the day. "Maybe she could make friends with that slut", added Sally Mueller, one of Greta's friend. Chris already figured that girl Sally was referring to was Beverly Marsh. She heard rumors going around town that Beverly had been engaging in promiscuous behavior. Chris continued to fix her hair in the mirror. "You know, it's not my business", she said. "But you shouldn't let those girls get to you".
"I appreciate the advice"
"Don't mention it"
"It's not true what they say about me, you know", she said.
"Ok", Chris nodded.
Then, the red-headed girl emerged from the bathroom stall to clean off her backpack. "I'm Chris, by the way", she said. "Beverly", Beverly replied with a half smile. "How come I don't see you around?"
"Let's just say that I'm not used to socializing with anyone in a new town", replied Chris. "That's basically the perks of being the new girl".
"Gotcha", Beverly nodded. "But, don't worry about it. Maybe you'll get use to it"
"Yeah, we'll see"
"Thanks again for the advice, new girl", she smirked.
"Sure thing", Chris replied. She didn't understand how a nice girl like Beverly could put up with such horrible mistreatment from people.
When she walked outside of the school, she walked passed the Bowers Gang, who started to follow behind her. "Hey, dyke, where's your dress?", Henry Bowers called out behind her, but she ignored him and continued to walk. "I said where's your dress?", he called out again. "Up your ass!", Chris snapped at him, causing the boys to make "Oooo" sounds and snicker. Henry then grabbed her and pinned her to a tree.
"You're fucking dead", he hissed.
"And why is that, Henry? So can go tell your daddy(in sort of a mocking tone) and that can make you feel like your hot shit in this town when the only thing you are is a fucking pussy?"
"You little bitch!", he raised his fist at her. She braced herself for the anticipated punch until he was interrupted by someone standing near the gang. "L-Leave her alone, B-bowers!", a brunette boy who stood in front of a group of other boys spoke up. "Did you say s-s-something, B-B-Billy?", Henry mocked his stutter, causing Belch and Patrick to snicker. He walked towards Bill and moved his face closer to his. "You got a free ride this year because of your little brother, but the ride's over, Denbrough", he said to him. He licked his hand and smeared it on Bill's cheek before walking away. Chris cringed in disgust. He glared at her as he left. "Are you ok?", a raven-haired boy with brown coke bottle glasses turned to her.
"Yeah. Thanks, but you really didn't have to do that", Chris said.
"We k-kind of had to", Bill replied.
"Especially from people like Henry Bowers", added a short brunette boy.
"As I could tell"
"You're the new girl, right? Christina?", Richie asked.
Jeez, It seems like to everyone in this town, I'm just "the new girl", she thought. "It's just Chris. I don't really go by Christina", she immediately corrected him, not wanting to recount the many times teachers had called her Christina by accident. "Oh. Well, I'm Bill", bill introduced himself and turned to introduce the others in order from the boy with coke bottle glasses. "This is Richie,Eddie, and S-Stanley". She said hi to each of them, especially Richie. He stared at her and Chris gave a small smile back. "Great. Well, I got to jet. See you", Chris abruptly started to walk away. "Wait", Richie called out to her, causing her to stop in her tracks. She turned to Richie.
"You know, I was wondering if..um..well,..if..you know, if...maybe if you want to-"
"Can you get to the question?", she asked, cutting him off and getting a little impatient.
"Yes", Richie quickly replied, mentally cursing to himself for acting so awkward towards her. "I was wondering if maybe you want to come with me to the arcade?"
Chris hesitated for a moment. She had never really intended on hanging out with any of the kids in Derry. "Ok, but I'll have to ask my aunt first when she gets here", she replied.
Author's Note: I feel like this kind of sucks so I might change some things, but idk
