Chapter 1: A Thank You Would Have Been Nice
-Gabriel-
What a joy. School. My mind wandered as air gushed out of the doors. I ran a tired hand through my hair as I sluggishly made my way to my class, late as always. I didn't get three feet in the doors when a girl bolted past me. I thought she was just running to avoid tardiness, but when she tripped all of her books flew across the tile. She got up snatching up one journal, and a box leaving the rest of her things behind and continued to flee from the building looking behind her occasionally as if someone was following her. Braydon threw his hands in the air and jumped to the side avoiding collision with the now crying girl that ran past him.
"Whoa! What the hell?" He yelled after her.
"Hey!" I nodded to him as he fell in step with me.
"Sup man?" He replied conjoining our hands in a high five, hand shake motion.
"Who was that?"
"Who her? That's Cassie Blake. She's a junior." I nodded along.
"Why was she in such a hurry?"
"Why do you care?" He asked nudging my shoulder.
"What? I don't!" I defended. "But she is kinda hot." I smirked.
"Eh. I've seen prettier girls. Hey, what time is it." He whispered.
"Why are you whispering?" I mocked in a whisper.
"Because I don't want someone to hear!"
"I don't give a fuck if someone hears that I fight! Its at 9:30." I yelled at the empty hall with the exception of a few student.
"Ok Ok chill." He surrendered. "Who pissed in your cereal?" My attention snapped to him.
"What?"
""Why are you so upset?" He rephrased.
"I got into a fight with my dad." I hung my head in shame.
"Wait. Your dad? I thought he was out of the picture. What happened?" He sounded a little worried.
"He just showed up out of nowhere and tried to apologize and we got into a big argument. I almost punched him." I chuckled.
"Oh." He said blankly. He was the type of friend who knew when not to push the subject. And that is exactly what he did. I nodded slowly, shoving my hands into my pockets. We walked to our first class joking with each other by bumping shoulders and talking about the party last night.
When we eventually reached our English class, we didn't even try to sneak in. Braydon flung the door; it ricocheted off of the wall with a loud BANG. The students and teacher flinched as they turned their attention to us. We smirked and continued to our seats.
"Mr.Green, Mr.Slonter, how nice of you to join us. What is it today? 20 minutes?" Mrs. Edwards tried to hide her rage, but the little vein that bulged in her forehead popped out slightly giving her away. We sat down and I put my feet up on the chair in front of me as Braydon pushed the kid next to him out of his seat just so he could put his feet on the desk. I laughed at his mere jerkiness and focused my already board expression on the annoyed teacher glaring at us.
"Take your feet off that child's desk, this instant!" she shouted at him. To be honest she wasn't an ugly woman but she was no Victoria Secret model either. I smirked at Braydon and he smirked back before looking back at the rather unamused teacher.
"Why don't you come up here and make me." He said slyly, causing a fit of hushed laughter to erupt from the students. To be clear, my school was a very high class boarding school that was set up like a college. The classrooms had a large set of stairs that crossed the room. On each step was around 45 to 50 desks and there were close to 7 steps. Yeah our classes were that big. And we sat at the very back.
"Detention!" she screamed slamming her hands down on her desk, turning a dark shade of pink.
"Hey!" I yelled. "Do NOT talk to my friend like that!" I snapped back trying not to laugh myself. A look of astonishment and fear crossed her face before quickly being replaced with evident rage. Hey, I can see that little vein from up here!
"Excuse me?!?!" she spat.
"You heard me! Apologize! NOW!" I growled. Brayodn snickered from beside me.
"Detention!"
"Apologize!"
"DE. TEN. TION!" she said clearly a bit louder, gritting her teeth.
"BOOOOO!" Braydon and I dead paned at her. We stood up and grabbed our stuff.
"Where do you think you two are going?" she said with confusion.
"Anywhere but here... you are no fun." I said letting the door swing shut behind me.
We roamed the halls for a while before Braydon told me he was going to go back to his room. I nodded and headed in the opposite direction.
I exited the building in attempt to get some fresh air. After a few minutes of walking I turned a corner into an alley way. A girl was pressed against a brick wall, with a large man holding her shoulders back as she thrashed. His dark meaty hand covered her mouth.
"Whoa! Sorry man." I stated as I watched her. Their eyes flicked to me. His were full of anger as his nostrils flared clearly out of breath. I looked back to the small girl. Her face was red and blotchy from crying. A tear fell down her cheek and her eyes silently pleaded for help.
"What are you doing to her?" I asked a little pissed off.
"What does it look like? This little slut got into a bit of trouble." He smirked evilly at her.
"Just let her go." I said calmly.
"Mind your own god damn business!" he boomed at me shaking the girl slightly causing her head to crash into the wall. I could hear her whimper into his hand.
"Let her fucking go!" I roared louder than he did and took a couple of steps towards him. He threw her into a corner and she fell to the ground cradling her wounds. I glared at him and threw a punch hitting him in the jaw. He stumbled back trying to regain his balance. This man was huge. He was built like an ox and had white scars that scribbled over his brown skin. He charged me and tackled me to the ground. His fists slammed in to my face, but I managed to dodge a couple leaving his hands to make contact with the concrete.
When he retracted his injured fist I took that opportunity to flip him over and beat on him. I hit him harder and harder as the image of what he might have done to her ran through my mind. I mean I'm not a saint or anything, but it is just plain wrong to force a girl to have sex with you. How pathetic. I got off of him and watched his swollen and bloodied face stand and run in the other direction.
I turned to the girl and went over to her. I towered over her crouching body.
"Are you ok?" concern laced my voice. She flinched and stood. She had loose blonde curls the fell over her shoulders. Her bluish hazel eyes sparkled with tears. Fear was no longer on her face but instead a look of gratitude. I dipped my head so I was eye level. "Cassie?" I asked as the realization of who she was hit me. Her eyes widened with worry and her breath became heavier. She took one last glance at me before she pulled herself over the tall wall with ease. Almost like she had done this before... many times before.
I stared at the spot where she had escaped as my mind tried to wrap itself around the whole situation.
"A thank you would have been nice." I grumbled to myself as I turned and left the alley.
