Christmas is the most joyful time of the year. It's meant to be spent with your family, having fun and opening gifts. You know how I'm spending my Christmas? Being held in prison while being questioned by a police officer. And I know you are wondering, why the hell is a 14 year old kid being taken to prison? Well sit back, relax and grab some snacks while I explain how a boring school day turned into a living nightmare.
If there's anything in life I hate, it's Monday's. Having to wake up in the morning after a long, relaxing weekend there's no worse feeling than that. Seriously screw Monday's. I was in a deep sleep dreaming about anime girls and ice cream, when a loud knock was heard at my door.
"GET UP KOBI IT"S TIME TO GO TO SCHOOL" My mom shouted " I also have a meeting with your teacher at school so be on your best behavior!"
"Ugh okay mom I know" I yawned, stretching my arms
" You also need to clean your room and get in the shower because lord knows you ain't getting no girls smelling like that" Mom said.
"GO AWAY" I screamed. Man did she get on my nerves.
After the rude awakening from my personal bully, my mom, I went to the bathroom to start preparing for the biggest challenge of my life. School. After getting out of the shower, I started to brush my teeth and comb my curly, nappy black hair. Looking into the mirror, I'm not really what girls would call a sexy jock, more like a skinny nerd. I'm 5ft, 5 inches with arms the size of a twig. I'm not considered ugly but not down-right handsome either. I'm just an average 14 year old skinny boy. Average, it's a word I hate because it describes me so perfectly.
Looks, Grades, Sports, Intelligence all those categories when it comes to me can be summed up in one word average. I wish I could be someone special, a hero in comics books with powers to save everyone, or a rich, handsome athlete with all the girls. But I'm just me, just painfully average.
With my depressing thoughts being gone I travel to the kitchen to eat my mom's famous burnt waffles and crunchy homemade eggs (Don't forget the syrup). As much as I love her, the woman could not cook.
One time for my 11th birthday, she insisted she cook my favorite meal, meatloaf. Somehow she ended up almost burning the house down, it took her 5 minutes of panicking and screaming to finally control the breath taking smoke. We ordered Chinese food shortly after.
"You fixed the usual today?" I said sarcastically while sitting down at the table.
"Keep being smart and I'll embarrass you in front of the school, you don't want to be pants down in front of your classmates do you?" Mom responded with venom.
That shut me up real quick. But she and I knew we were joking with each other. That's how our relationship is and I'm extremely grateful for it, she's like my best friend.
Okay, so what? I'm a momma's boy and I say that proudly! Another reason for that is my Mom and my Dad divorced when I was very young. My mom never talked about my dad at all. I tried to ask her about it once but she wouldn't say anything to me. It's weird everytime I ask her about him, the mood of the room thickens, almost like I'm being suffocated.
Then after almost a full minute of tense silence she would just smile and say "I'll tell you when you're older Kobi, I promise".
"Kobi" "Kobi" "KOBI" Mom shouted
"Huh... yes?" I snapped out of my thoughts
"Did you hear anything I said? Or were you thinking about those weird porn girls you are watching all the time? '' Mom said.
" IT'S CALLED ANIME IT'S NOT THAT NASTY STUFF" I blushed. I really hated this woman sometimes. Mom laughed while crunching on her charcoaled flavored waffles.
"Let's see what bullshit the governments up to today" She jokingly said as she reached for the tv remote. Great, I get to spend another morning watching boring information about stuff I don't care about I thought with a frown.
I continue trying to eat my breakfast, as my mom continues flickering through channels with a bored look on her face. After what felt like an eternity she finally decided on the news channel.
"Welcome to the news I'm Jahiem Mcneel reporting about blah blah blah" I tuned out the tall bald man with eyes similar to a dead fish, reporting the news. I didn't really pay attention to what was happening in the world, people getting killed, kids going to jail etc. I could care less about it, that's just how this cruel life is unfortunately.
" Kobi look" Mom interrupted me out of my mini ted talk. I looked at the small black TV screen to see what she was talking about. The big blue headline read "10 KIDS FOUND DEAD ON MARYLAND STREET". My body grew cold and goosebumps traveled down my arm. Recently, stories like these appear on the news a lot, images of people being brutally killed.
The channels blurred out the corpses, but the truth like a heavy rock weighed deep into the souls of the viewers watching. "This is why it's not safe Kobi, you have to watch out for things like this". Mom explained with a stern look on her face. Mom was rarely ever serious, but the rare times she is I would shut up and listen.
"These killings have been happening for a while now, People have been dying more and more around this area with no evidence or reason why" Mom explained " I get so scared when you leave the house Kobi, so please promise me that you will pay attention to your surroundings. This world is a very dangerous place"
I looked at her arms and noticed that she was shaking, she's terrified I thought. "Okay mom, I promise" I said with a smile, looking into her eyes with unwavering confidence.
She looked back at me with a small smile that could make men blush and said " Thank you, I love you Kobi". I don't know if it was my imagination or not but there was, for a second, a hint of sadness in her brown eyes.
