“I hate weddings.” I grumbled. The dining hall just HAD to be spotlessly clean. The couches and walls just HAD to be covered with blue, scarlet and gold cloths. The symbolism was way too obvious. So obvious, that it looked tacky. It was like putting up a sign, saying, “Hey people the Fire lord’s marrying a water tribe princess!!!! It’s amazing!!!”
Two words.
Tacky and lame.
“Heyyy!! Azula!!! Guess what!!!!!!!” Katara zoomed into the room, carrying a large pink canvas shopping bag.
“What now? Can’t you go and bother Zuko?” I snapped, turning around so that my back faced the annoying girl.
“Hey, come on! I’m just here to tell you that you’re going to be my bridesmaid!!” Katara yipped in delight, grabbing my arm and dancing me around. I rolled my eyes and peeled off her hands.
“What? Why? Can’t Toph be your bridesmaid?” I inquired, determined to avoid wearing a tacky bridesmaid’s dress.”
“Come on! Toph’s such a……. Tomboy. Plus, she hates wearing dresses. I need a bridesmaid who’s well-mannered and feminine.”
“Which part of me looks well-mannered and feminine?” I hissed viciously, still with my back to her.
“Well, you can wear a dress, check. You can talk politely, check. You’re pretty, check.” She babbled. Then she frowned. “You can dance, right?”
“I only know one dance. The dragon dance. And it’s not even a dance. It’s a firebending sequence so it doesn’t count.” I huffed, crossing my arms.
“Oh well, not a problem. I can fetch you an instructor. And anyways, dancing is easy. If you can do the firebending thingy, you can surely manage a waltz, and maybe a very, very slow tango?” She pried, hopeful.
“Fine. Maybe I can, but there’s one thing I can’t do. I’ll never get a dance partner, because all the boys are scared of me. They think I’d eat them for breakfast or toast them on a campfire or something terrible like that.”
At this, the irritating rascal laughed.
She dared to laugh.
“You mean, you don’t notice that… a certain several boys are attracted to you? You don’t notice at all?”
I stared blankly at her.
“Never mind. I’ll find you a partner.” She giggled. “I bought you a few dresses to choose from.”
She whipped several bundles of lacy fabric out of her pink bag.
A few was an understatement.
It looked like she’d bought an entire shopful of dresses.
“Let’s see, there’s a wonderful pink and purple one….” We waved a horrific bundle of gaudy lace and chiffon at me, “There’s this really nice blue and silver…. “ She picked up a drab dark blue velvet gown, “A light pinkish red one with bright green lace and matching silk gloves, A maroon one with yellow beads………..”
Ugh.
That woman has absolutely horrible taste in gowns.
“You know what? I’m gonna find my own….” I stammered, edging away from the pile of distasteful dresses. “Can I just wear my usual outfit?” I asked hopefully.
“NO!! Of course not! It’s a wedding, not boot-camp. Dispense with the armor! It looks terrible.”
Hey!
The armor does NOT look terrible!
“Fine I’ll just wear one of my own skirts then.” I grumbled. Katara shook her head.
“Too plain.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Well, there’s no way I’m wearing those.” I grumbled
She sighed.
“Oh well, since you don’t like these I’ll go back to the shop and look for more.” She waved, and popped out the door.
