It was finally the last period. Mateo has made it through the day without saying a word. This is not something he was particularly proud of because he was trying to change how he was; who he was. Mateo felt as if he only took steps back. It seemed as is his jar weighed 1,000 pounds. He felt as if his past outrunned him. Class ended, and he wanted to spend time with his friends. Everything starts to move fast. The other students are out waiting for his parents. They are all talking but Mateo can't capture a single word. His friends say that they can't stay after school, so Mateo rushes through the students to leave the school. He didn't want to be alone; he couldn't be.
