The summer before 9th grade

"C'mon Lachlan! Hurry up!"

I urged as Lachlan trailed behind me with his bike. I stopped my bike to wait up for him. The forest was a bright green, the sun peeking through the branches of the tall trees. Lachlan finally caught up, his bike tires kicking up dirt from the dirt pathway.

He was sweaty, with a drop dropping down from his forehead. He quickly wiped it with his left hand.

"Jheez, Angelica. You need to slow down."

Lachlan told me, panting. I beamed, not sweating at all.

"No, you need to catch up. What are you going to do if you want to try out for the school rugby team, huh?"

I demanded, looking at my exhausted best friend. He rolled his eyes.

"I'll get in shape in time for that, trust me. I'm just slacking today."

Lachlan answered, his face still red. To be fair, we have been biking for 2 hours. For me, biking or swimming calms me. It makes me forget that I'm starting high school in just a week from now.

"Well, are you ready now?"

I asked gripping the handlebars of my white bike. Lachlan's eyes widened.

"No... for what?"

Lachlan asked, alert. I smirked.

"To race! See you at the end!"

I pedalled off on my bike, weaving through the stray branches and logs. Lachlan was behind me, panting. I could see the cars from the road as we got to the end of the pathway. I finally stopped at the end.

"You're crazy!"

Lachlan shouted and stopped beside me. I chuckled and pat his back lightly.

"Crazy? But you love me."

I reminded him. Lachlan smiled and shook his head. His bright blue eyes looked into mine.

"Yeah, yeah, only because I'm obligated to."

Lachlan retorted. Now it was my turn to smile and roll my eyes.

"Whatever, champ. Let's go back to my place and raid the refrigerator."

I told him. Lachlan's eyes lit up by the mention of looking for food to eat.

"Eat then go play some video games?"

Lachlan asked. I laughed and nodded.

"Yeah. Y'know? you're lucky to have me as a best friend."

I informed Lachlan. Lachlan ran his hand through his messy blonde hair.

"For sure I am. Expect a love letter written from me at your locker in high school."

Lachlan teased. My heart started to beat nervously at the mention of high school but I didn't let it show.

"How considerate. Don't let me down because now I expect a dozen roses in my locker too."

I teased back as we started to ride back to my house.
