*Niall's POV*
We had been at the party for only a half an hour and the lake shore was already filled with kids from our graduating class. Liam and I stood off to the side watching everyone greet each other. I glanced sideways at him. He sipped his drink slowly, his eyes gazing out onto the lake. I was still worried about him. I tried to get him to just stay home with me, but he insisted on coming. He claimed he needed a distraction, and maybe he did. I silently told myself to just let him be.
Around us people were laughing and dancing to the blasting music. Fairy lights were strung from the tree branches and tiki torches stuck out from the ground. Whoever has set the whole party up did a great job. It was a perfect night too. The sky was clear and a warm breeze floated around. I had never been one for parties but I planned on enjoying myself.
"Oi, Nialler!" I looked down to see Bekah decked out in red, white, and blue. The bottom layer of her hair was stark white while the top was blood red with blue tips. Her dress was a mess of stars and stripes.
"Erm, what's up with the getup?" I smirked at her.
"It's the Fourth of July," she said matter-of-factly.
"For the Americans," I reminded her.
"No shit, Sherlock. I'm wearing this to show my support for them whooping our asses and fighting for their freedom," she rolled her eyes at me.
"You look like a flag." I earned a punch on the arm.
"Watch it boy. I'm off to mingle and get away from you bores." She started to walk away. "Oh, and don't forget the fireworks later!" she added before she melted into a throng of bodies.
I turned back to Liam. "You okay, babe?"
"Yeah, Ni, I'm great," he falsey smiled, nodding too quickly. I ignored his lie and took his hand.
"Griffen still hasn't come home, has he?" I murmered quietly, tracing circles into his palm.
His eyes became cloudy and he looked down. "No. But you know what? I could care less. I hate him, he hates me. Ha! I don't care if I never see him again," he chuckled coldy.
There was no truth in his words but I wasn't going to push. "Okay," was all I said and his eyes thanked me for dropping it.
"I'm going to get another drink, you want something?" he asked.
"Nah, I'm good."
"Alright, I'll be back." He strolled off towards the drink table. I leaned back onto the tree and checked my phone for the time. Zayn had texted me last night saying he would come tonight but it was already 9:30 and there was no sign of him.
Bekah skipped past me and I grabbed her arm. "Hey, have you seen Zayn? Or Lou?"
"I haven't seen Zayn all night and I saw Lou sneak off with Harry earlier, probably to gnaw each others' faces off," she scoffed.
"Oh, okay. Thanks Bek."
"Wait, you got Zayn to come? How?"
"I invited him the other day when I was at his house--"
"Wait, you went to his house?" she interrupted me.
"Yes, I saw him and offered him a ride home," I explained.
"Oh," she gave me an odd look.
"What?" I asked her.
"Nothing. I'll let you know if I see Zayn," she said before prancing off.
Hardly five minutes later I felt a tap on my shoulder. Spinning around I found Zayn shyly standing there, dressed in all black. "Hey," he nervously smiled at me.
