I remember way back when
We would roll down the hills of prickly green grass behind the school
Laughing so hard that fat little droplets rained from our eyes,
And somehow, we loved it.
there was a time
You would take my hand,
and we would just run
and talk,
Alone with nothing but something you called soulmates.
Years passed by,
and dreams of treehouses in the woods became school, school, boys, school
Like little messages of morse code, tip tapping your sos through empty lips
And your gentle smile became petrifying
as every time you smiled at me,
I could hear nothing but
a shattering patience.
I remember crying, finally,
breaking down, in front of you
and you not knowing what to do,
just sat there,
in the dull dead grass behind a new school, new life, new you
a soulmate that I once knew.
and when I finally said goodbye,
waving as I left that little town where the people were lost
and the grass wasn't greener,
sometime, somehow,
we found each other
just as we let go.
