Betty-
"Betty?" Archie stood at my doorframe.
"Yeah?" I looked up from my shattered phone.
"I...uh got you you something since it's your birthday." He said in sort of a question.
"Is it a card?" I asked.
"Here why don't you open it." He smiled and handed me a neatly wrapped box with a yellow bow and white wrapping paper, and a card.
"Who wrapped this?" I asked.
"I did."
"No, actually."
He sighed "Cheryl." He said. I unwrapped it to see a brand new iPhone 8.
"You're kidding?" I asked.
"Well I know you've needed a new phone, I can help you set it up in a bit if you want." He said rubbing the back of his neck. I ran to hug him, my bun bouncing as I ran towards him. "How the hell did you get the money to pay for this, Mom would never pay for this." I said.
"I worked extra shifts at la bon' Nuit."
"You mean Veronica's restaurant?"
"Yeah, speaking of Veronica, she invited us over for a little birthday dinner." Archie said.
"I thought..."
"Mom's working late tonight." He said.
"Of course She is." I mumbled.
"It's okay, we always have fun with Veronica." He said.
"I guess that's true."
"Hey, it's gonna be okay, and besides mom would've gotten drunk or found a way to ruin this night." I hugged him.
"Thank you Archie." I smiled.
"I made birthday pancakes." He said.
"I'm not hungry." I told him.
"I'm gonna go to the bathroom, but after that we can set up the phone." He left my room and closed it. My lip started to tremble as my brother left the room, the only person who made me feel safe. All I could do was cry because today I was gonna do it. I was gonna kill myself.
