chapter 5: Gummie bear?
It's finally lunch time and as always, I bought lunch, although today was different. The girl from before came to sit with us and we talked alot. Turns out that we were friends in primary school but when we got to 7th grade, we drifted apart, I hung out more with Rylie and she just thought our friendship was over.
"Ooh. Remember in 6th grade, science class, the worst chemistry mess up of all time." Erin laughed at the memory. "Oh yeah, I remember, we all had science together that year, God, Mr. Whittle tried making elephants toothpaste but ended up making giants toothpaste!" We all burst into laughter at that point. "Oh my god, everyone was so scared, especially Ms. Lopez when she came to borrow some chalk!" I said between laughs.
"I really missed our chill sesses, and you..." Erin paused dramatically, looking me in the eye, reminding me of our favourite game. "Convenient store dash!" We yelled in unison and started laughing. "What's that?" Rylie asked, wanting to join in on our inside joke. "Uh! Maybe we can do it tonight, I mean as celebration for our reunion!" Erin said excitedly. "Yeah, then we can invite this dingbat!" We all started laughing and talking more. Man I missed Erin.
Time skip to after school
"So are you ready for the wild night ahead of you?" Rylie laughed and shrugged. "Sometimes I can't even handle you, and I believe that tonight will be one of those times." He sighed, shaking his head. "Hey! At least we invited you! I promise you'll love it!" He laughed at me and ruffed my hair. "Ok. What do I wear?" I leaped into his arms and smiled. "That's the spirit."
Another time skip to right before they leave
"Emilie, are you done yet!" I just blew him off. "Where are you two going?" I heard Mrs. Ivy from downstairs. I rushed down before Rylie could answer. "We're going to my friend's house, movie night, and we don't want to be late. We'll be back by 10. 10:30 for the lastest. Bye Mrs. V" I quickly dragged Rylie out before we could be interrogated.
We finally reached Erin's house, which wasn't even that far, and she was talking with a older guy. "Emilie..." I remember that voice anywhere... "Haygen. I haven't seen you since I was 12." I ran and hugged him. He was shocked but hugged me back, squeezing the life out of me. "I missed you gummie bear." He whispered into my ear but apparently everyone heard. "Gummie bear?" Erin and Rylie asked at the same time. "Yeah. One day when I came to visit, you were busy with chores so I hung out with your brother. Apparently him and Nicolas were lab partners and we got to know each other, and once my brother invited me to one of their study sessions, just to get away from Charissa, and long story short, we had a competition to see who could eat the most gummie bears, and I won-obviously-and because he was a sore loser, he said I was a gummie bear because you are what you eat, and because my cheeks were chubby like a bear because of the gummies." We both laughed at the memory.
"I remember it like it was yesterday..."
I got lost in the memory and didn't notice that an arm was snaked around my waist and people started talking.
"Yeah, we've been dating for a while now, right Em?" Everyone looked at me and I was confused so I just agreed to what, I'm assuming Rylie, said. "Yep." I gave a nervous chuckle but when I looked at Haygen, he had a pained expression. I looked at his big reddish-orangeish eyes, they were dark red, that usually happens when he's upset. "Oh. I see." He said in a loud but barely noticeable sad tone. I saw a glimmer of pain in his eyes and it ate me up inside.
Flashback
"I'm going to start calling you gummie bear." He chuckled softly and my brother laughed, and left saying he needed the bathroom, but I noticed he wiggled his eyebrows at Haygen and he blushed a little, shrugging Nick off. "Ok. Two things, one, why gummie bear, and two, what was that about?" He looked at me and his eyes sparkled. I know it's crazy to say, but I was in love. I was 12, but I knew that in my heart, I was in love with my best friend's brother, but it could never work. He was turning 16 in October and he doesn't even look at me like he looks at other girls. "Hey gummie bear, you wanna go get some ice cream, I promise I'll pay?" I looked at him and smiled. "I don't see why not." He beamed and grabbed my hand. "We'll be right back Nick, we're getting ice cream, I'll get your usual." Haygen yelled as we ran out over to Steffie's ice cream parlour.
When we got there, it was half empty. We took a seat and Steffie came to take our order. "What can I get ya love birds?" Her texan accent was deeper than usual. "Oh we're not together, we're just friends!" I quickly corrected her and Haygen gave her a sad smile. "Um, can we have three ice creams, one with three scoops, one of the scoops chocolate chip, the other cookie dough and the last one peppermint, and the other two ice creams can be one cookie dough with gummie bear toppings and the other just plain banana." Steffie nodded and repeated the order. After making sure that it was correct, she left. "Can I ask you something?" I started feeling anxious. "Y-yeah." He gently took my hand and caressed it. "How do you handle Charissa? Cause from what I've heard about her, she's the worst person to be around." I sighed heavily. I could feel the tears forming in my eyes. "I honestly don't know. To be honest, I just block her out. I go to my room as fast as possible and lock the door and put in my earphones so I don't have to hear her. But sometimes she gets me before I reach my room and she yells at me, putting me down, asking me why she was burdened with me in the first place or one of her 'boyfriends' tries to... 'touch' me. So I found a way to block her out," I lifted my sleeve. Haygen was the first person and only person outside of 'family' that I told willingly. "It was first a way to feel something other than being a mistake, but later became an addiction. I tried stopping but nothing helped. I just feel better off dead..." My voice cracked at the end, stopping me from continuing my sad story. Haygen suddenly engulfed me in a hug. It was the first time I felt loved. Our ice cream came a little while after and we ended up splitting the bill. Haygen handed me my ice cream and I smiled. "How did you know this is my favourite flavour?" He just smirked as we left. "Because I can. It's one of the things I like about you, you're unique..."Unique
That word rang through my head as we went to the store. The one thing I loved about the store is the fact that Erin's uncle actually owns it and he lets us 'raid' his shop, only to work it off for two to three weeks in his shop.
When we arrived, I realised that Haygen was still with us. "You coming with Haygen?" He smiled at me and I heard Rylie growl and he just grabbed my hand. "Of course, I would love to spend more time with you again." He said and that only seemed to make Rylie even more pissed.
"Uncle Tony, we're here!" Erin yelled as we walked into the store. "Ah! Where's my favourite niece, come give uncle Tony a hug." Erin ran into his arms and smiled brightly. Haygen chuckled and smiled at his sister. "What wrong big man, to grown to give your uncle a hug." Haygen just smirked. "Gimme a sec Uncle Tony, I got a surprise for you." Erin's eyes widened and she ran over to me. The suspense was killing me. "Uuuuunnncccclllllleeee Tonyyyy!!!!!!!" Haygen yelled as he tackled his uncle to the ground. We all erupted into a fit of laughter and smiled at my childish bestie. "Wait, is that Little Emilie?" He asked looking at me as I nervously chuckled, blushing at the nickname. "Well come give uncle Tony a hug!" I laughed and kneeled down to give him a hug. "You've grown up so much! How's Nicki boy?" I smiled and shook my head. "His got a hot as hell girlfriend with twins on the way." I said, smiling at the thought of having a niece and nephew on the way. Uncle Tony and Haygen both broke into fake sobbing. "The poor thing, we didn't even get to throw him a 'congrats, you're officially shackled' party." Haygen suddenly said, dramatically waving his hands in the air. "Oh will you stop with the melodramatic act and man up, it's not like his married yet." Erin said exasperatedly. "But that's just it, he might ask her to marry him, than he'll be gone forever." Uncle Tony spoke and I just went to the back. I walked through the aisles, skimming through the snacks and stopped on the slushy machine. I quietly took a cup-the extra large one-and started filling it up with different flavours. When I was satisfied I went back but I walked into a wall. That wasn't there before. I looked up and met with a pair of red eyes with orange around the centre of the eyes. "We really can't bump into each other like this. It was fun the first time around but, not so much now." We both laughed quietly. "Where's uncle Tony?" He pointed towards the till. "Over by the Cash register, incase any real customer comes. But I'm glad I got you alone, can we just talk?" I looked at him and my heart started pounding in my chest. "Sure, what's wrong?" He looked off since earlier now that I noticed. "You." I was taken by surprise. "I'm confused?" He sighed and looked directly at me which only made my already pounding heart beat faster, if that was even possible. "One moment you're opening up to me and I actually thought we had something, then you completely shut not only me but everyone out and a few years later I finally see you again and turns out you have a boyfriend!" He looked so hurt. I did this. I broke his heart. "I'm sorry." I said in a quiet voice, wishing that I could just disappear. "I get that your life is hard, but next time at least talk to me and tell me things. I'm here for you, you should have known that by now, and I'm hurt that you just forgot about me, that you just shut me out." His voice started fading as he neared the end.
My heart felt like a blade was plunged into it, and it was terrible.
"Haygen. The only reason I stopped talking to you was because I thought you deserved someone better, someone who wouldn't burden you, like I burden everyone." He walked over and wiped my tears away. "Why would you think that?" I shrugged and looked at the floor. I felt his hand gently lifting my head so that I was looking at him. "Don't ever doubt yourself you hear me, and if you're happy with Liryle, then I'll respect it and we can stay friends." He said gently laying a kiss on my forehead. I smiled and dried my eyes and we went back to the rest.
"Who's ready to get drunk!" Was the last thing I remembered about last night. I don't even remember who said that, but when I find out, I'm going to kill them.
