She suddenly realized she might be alone for the rest of her life, her head hanging low no matter where she went. Ever since the death of her brother, Jeremy, she hasn't been the same. Her mother died when she was 2, because of cancer, but that didn't hit as hard. She didn't know her mother well, but her dad says that she was an amazing woman. Her mom, apparently, was a doctor, and worked very hard to help her family. She was an amazing mother and the best wife he had ever had. Before Jeremy died, her father was strict, but nice, and love her to the bottom of his heart. Now, though, he was reckless and mean, get drunk almost every night and yelling at Lily, somethimes hitting her. Her brother was a very kind, generous young man, and was 23 years old before... he died. It was an accident, but he should have look both ways before crossing. That was 5 months ago, and Lily still felt...empty, and broken. She barely talked, she lashed out at almost everybody, even her best friends, and barely left her room after school. Sure, she still has great grades, and has had them since she ever started school, but great grades don't mean anything anymore. No one cared about her anymore, except maybe her friends.
One night, after several slaps from her dad, Lily had enough. She bolted out of her house and ran. She didn't have a destination, she just let her mind take her feet somewhere. Her feet took her to her best friend's house. She knocked softly. It was almost midnight, but her friend opened the door. Lily hugged her and broke down. Rose embraced her tight.
"It's OK, you can stay her."
