Fake News (Quickwrite)

Kim was scrolling through a website on her newsfeed, and all of a sudden, she gasped.

"Layla! 5 Seconds of Summer are disbanding in 2 weeks!" she said, shocked and confused.

I looked at her with a confused look. "Where the heck did you read that?" I said. She showed me the website. " '5 Seconds of Summer return to say they've broken up, releases a song with only one member?' "

Kim nodded. "thebignews.com. It's where I get the juiciest stuff."

"Are you sure that's a credible source?"

Kim hesitated for a moment. "It's the internet, Layla, it doesn't lie."

I slapped my forehead. "Kim. We're in 4th grade. You should know how to separate the truth from the lies. How to separate the good from the bad."

"But Layla, the internet's not a bad place."

"I can be, though, if you go to the wrong place. Here, give me the phone."

I searched up "5 Seconds of Summer" on Google and went to the news section. The first several stories were along the lines of "5 Seconds of Summer are back from their break with the release of 'Want You Back' "

"See, Kim, they didn't come back broken up. Luke's the main vocalist, after all, do you know what a transition is? They're just doing something different. Tip number one: if you don't see it anywhere else, it's probably not true. You've gotta read it on several sites to know that it's true."

Layla went all off on internet safety. When she finally finished, Kim was staring at her weirdly.

"Ok...Layla...thanks for the info...Imma just...go and process all that..."

Kim walked away and shook her from all the information that was just spewed out at her.
