Brokenstar Headcanon

Spoilers for Arc 1 along with some minor childhood information (pretty much just: if you've heard of how he was treated as a kit or know about Lizardstripe, there's nothing new.

2- This headcanon is based for the reasons why he became evil, but it does NOT excuse his actions as a villian! His actions are wrong, and should NEVER be considered okay!

Summary:

As a kit, Brokenstar was bullied and abused by Lizardstripe for being a "worthless/pathetic kit" and allowing the other kits to bully him without a care at all; he desperately wanted to prove himself to Lizardstripe and the other kits in hope he'd be respected.

But he was only a kit and he had to wait to be an apprentice until he was 6 moons, Brokenstar felt that if he didn't have to wait that long he would have been able to do something to make Lizardstripe like him, thus if he broke that rule of the code, he would be preventing the same it from happening to more kits (in his eyes).

With the young kits training as apprentices, Brokenstar saw the kits the same as he saw himself as a "pathetic/worthless" kit when they weren't getting strong fast enough in his eyes. Brokenstar became harsher and crueler to the kits to try to "shape them up," finding himself acting more and more like Lizardstripe, throwing him into denial and ending up with the death of two kits at his own claws.

At this point, he's finding himself continuously denying that he's acting like Lizardstripe, but the power he held felt too great to stop himself when he began to really see himself acting the way she did- falling into a neverending mental swirl of inner conflict.

(a) - I kind of assumed Broken broke the "6 months old apprentices" rule because of Lizardstripe. In my headcanon he desperately wanted to prove himself as a kit so Lizardstripe and the other kits would respect him, but he couldn't because he was just a kit.

So maybe in a twisted kind of logic he thought "if I didn't have to wait 6 moons, maybe I would have done something and Lizardstripe would have liked me" so he decided to break the rule once he became a leader

Idk it that makes sense lmao, it doesn't make his actions any less horrible don't get me wrong

(j) - But, in a twisted way, the idea was sorta,, sweet? I get what you're saying lmao, he's bad but he probably really thought that was a good idea & not just "mUsT. bE. EVIL!"

(a) - yeah I get what you mean!
He wasn't like "don't like kids, HATE kids, must hurt the kids" when he broke that rule (well
ok he did kill two kits after which kind of contradicts that i guess oops)

(w) - I love this headcanon! With the kits' deaths, I think he probably saw them as himself as the "weak and pathetic" kit Lizardstripe bullied and in turn, was way too harsh and aggressive on them, killing them.

(a) - Ooooh yeah it could be that, I really like that idea! He wanted to push them to their maximum to make sure they proved themselves but it didn't turn out well

It's kind of a bummer that in his attitude he only was a "*evil laugh* I killed them; I'm bad" in the books, it would have been interesting to see him try to explain himself and see his weird logic.

(w) - Me too; it really would have been great to see more into his thoughts. Honestly I can see it as some sort of defense mechanism of trying not to allow himself to believe he was wrong; probably mentally breaking down like he is seeing himself slowly turn into the bully Lizardstripe was to kits, but desperately not allowing himself to believe it.

(j) - Yeah! Like, his intentions started out well enough, wanting to be the best so cats like Lizardstripe couldn't dump on him ever again, and making kits train early so they could be the same

And eventually he realized how he was acting, but by then the power felt so good and caused this massive conflict within himself
