Better Find Another Superstition

When I got out of the janitor's closet, I wandered down the hall, looking for Harry. I really wanted to start thinking of all the things he probably said about me. But, let's not get too carried away with this. I started looking up because, you know, he's tall. I finally found a ginger headed person across the hall (he's also the only ginger headed person in our school).

"Harry! Harry, come here!"

He turned around said something to Greg and they started speed walking away. Greg is basically Harry's chill and hippie-like friend, they do everything together (except Greg doesn't do drugs like an actual hippie).

"What the hell are you doing? Come over here. I need to talk to y-"

While that's happening a bunch of kids came blasting music down the hallway.
They sped up. I tripped over my own feet.

"Hey Ginger, are we still 'running'?"

"I need to get away from Katie"

" What happened, lovey boy? Don't you have a crus-"

"Shhh. Yes, I just ... can't talk to her right now. I'm not prepared,"

"What is that even supposed to mean?"

"Forget it, Jones! Let's just go to Mr. Gallotto's class."

"Wait!"

Greg stops in the middle of the hallway and starts thinking.

"What?"

I tried to follow him in his thoughts, but he has an unreadable mind. I never know what he's thinking.

"Harry, do you-"

"No I don't!" I said nervously

"LET ME FINISH ! Do. You. Have. The answers to the homework? I think I forgot to do it"

"Really Greg?

...

No, mine are probably wrong."

After my beautifully failed attempt, I went to my last class, social studies. The one class I don't have with Harry. I sat through a boring class and had started reading my book about apothecaries that do magic, but the bell screeched a horrifying sound in my ears that signaled my exit. Allison met up with me and we silently walked out the door together. I decided to start conversation again.

"What did he say about me?"

" I can't tell you. I promised not to say anything"

"You failed at that part"

Allison just rolled her eyes. I looked around and hoped for something.

Oh. a flower

I picked it up. It was a small daisy with short pale petals. Allison snatched it and started plucking the petals thinking if Harry does like me or not.

I rolled my eyes so hard, they may have gotten stuck in my skull.

I was walking home with Greg and I saw Katie across the street. I'm really not up for this right now.

Oh no, don't say hi. Don't say it. Please don't say hi to me. Please don't notice me.

"Dude"

"What?"

"Quit talking to yourself, I'm trying to listen to some tunes here"

Ugh, Greg.

Oh look, A black cat.

No wonder I'm so unlucky, I notice all the superstitious things. And I don't even believe in them. Wait, what if they are real? Does this mean something? Does Katie not like me?? I might be overreacting. I mean, she did kick me in the shin.

I'm having an existential crisis over here.

Oh no, Harry's across the street. Should I... No, he's been ignoring me all day. I've been ignoring him too, I don't want to talk. Oh no. He's looking.

No, don't say hi. Don't say it.

"Hey look it's Harry! I'll say hi!" Allison whispered

"Your right Allison. It's Harry. Wait don't say..."

"HEY HARRY!" she screamed in a loud yet flirty tone. (Hold on there...)

"HEY ALLI, HI KATIE" he responded, waving.

I waved back but didn't say anything.

She acted like we didn't have a Civil War all day. I was supposed to win, and she brought the enemy within my front lines.

That was real taunting on Allison's part.
