Piper's Death

Piper sat on top of the Zeus cabin at Camp Half-Blood- like she did most of the time nowadays- thinking about different ways that the seven could've beaten Gaea with tears streaming down her face.

"Why couldn't have been Percy?" She growled angrily kicking a pebble off of the roof. Piper sighed. She knew that Jason would never want her thinking like that under any circumstances. "Why, Jason?" She whispered in despair. "Why did you leave me? Why did you leave me like that?" She asked staring at the horizon just thinking about how hard she had worked to get Jason to kiss her and to love her how she loved him. Then how easily he was taken away.

For hours Piper laid on the roof of Cabin 1 just thinking. And crying, but mostly thinking. At about dawn, Piper heard the deep rumbling ring of the conch horn. Piper sat straight up. She was insulted. Why was there another attack on camp a week after Jason's and many more heroic deaths? Including the loved by all Nico Di Angelo who died saving Percy from eternal torture. Even when Piper was climbing down she was mumbling colorful words in English and Greek.

"Hey, Pipes!" Leo yelled. Piper scowled.

"Don't," Piper started. The tone of her voice made Leo's face instantly fall. Piper almost felt terrible. "EVER call me that again." She warned. Leo was instantly visibly pale.

"You got it," Leo squeaked out nodding furiously. Piper started to feel bad for snapping at Leo and wanted to apologize, but before she could get a word out, battle cries went up in the distance and Leo took off.

"Wait, Leo..." She whispered taking a step forward.

"Come on Piper," Annabeth whispered from behind the depressed daughter of love. Piper sighed and reluctantly nodded.

--------

Piper numbly fought next to Annabeth-who fought next to Percy-for about 10 minutes before she started to get distracted and tired. With huge disappointment in herself, she realized that this was the result of coping herself up in Jason's old bed with nothing to eat, drink or do for a week.

"A-Annabeth-" She gasped with sweat pouring down her face as she clumsily cut down a dracaena with her dagger. "Annabeth, please."

"Piper?" The blonde asked clearly very concerned for her friend. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"

Piper opened her mouth to speak, but she was so tired and hungry that all that she could manage was a small, "Ahh." Before she collapsed in the middle of the battle.

"Piper!" Annabeth yelled and immediately ran to her side.

"Percy, could you-"

"I got it, Wise Girl," Percy responded as he continued to fight off monsters.

"Piper! Annabeth, what happened?" Leo asked as he ran over and dropped to his knees next to the- physically and mentally- weak and broken daughter of Aphrodite.

"I don't know!" Annabeth responded horrified. "She just collapsed! Piper, please get up!"

"I'm trying, Annabeth," Piper whispered struggling to sit up. After about a minute, Leo and Annabeth helped Piper to her feet.

"Annabeth! Watch out!" Percy suddenly yelled as he continued to fight off the dracaena. Leo, Annabeth, and Piper all quickly turned to the son of Poseidon.

"Get down!" Leo yelled. Suddenly, everyone dropped to the floor like a sack of potatoes. Everyone except Piper.

It all happened in slow motion. Everyone dropped to the floor, Piper slowly turned around, the hellhound pounced at the demigods and its teeth sank deep into Piper's side.

The daughter of Aphrodite was already so numb that she didn't feel the monster's sharp, thick teeth sinking deeply into her side and shoulder.

"Piper!"

Piper finally fell to the ground.

Leo was the first by her side. "No, Piper..." he said. "Not you too... Please..."

"I-I'm sorry, Leo..." Piper said breathlessly. For the first time in a week, her mind was alive. "I n-never meant to hurt y-you."

"You never did, Beauty Queen," Leo said taking her hand. "Focus on my hand, okay? You're gonna be alright." Piper couldn't feel Leo's touch. "Annabeth! Find a healer!"

"Already on it!" she called back. She yelled for Percy to protect Piper and Leo before running out of sight.

"L-Leo..." Piper breathed shakily.

Leo's attention snapped back to Piper. "Yeah, Beauty Queen?"

Piper inhaled shakily before asking the question that had been running through her mind. "I was more than... just a pretty face. Right?"

Piper could see that Leo was taken aback by her question. "Of course, Piper," he said. "You are strong, brave and the best daughter of Aphrodite. I couldn't be prouder to call you my best friend. And I know that Jason couldn't have found anyone better than you."

A tear slid down Piper's blood-splattered face and a smile grew. The first smile in too long.

Leo knew that Piper was giving into the abyss. "Piper, please... Hold on." But his pleads were not heard.

Piper took a shaky breath in and sighed it out one last time before closing her eyes forever and sinking into the blanketed abyss. Maybe, she thought, just maybe, I'll get to see Jason and we can be happy together in Elysium.
