I waited on the couch for my friends to come. I heard a loud clap of thunder and jumped a little at the unexpected noise. I loved the lightning but I had to admit it scared me some times.
The doorbell rang and I jumped up to get it. At the door stood Hunter and Amee. They smiled as I opened the door to welcome them.
“Come in guys,” I stepped aside as they walked in. Outside I saw Alekk’s car pull up. He was with Charisma. They got out of their car and immediately ran over.
“Well we’re all here now.” Amee said.
“Yes and no parents right?” Alekk asked causing me to laugh.
“No, no parents.” We walked into the living room and sat down. We each sat different couches. Amee and Hunter on one, Alekk and Charisma on another, and me on my own couch. I looked at the two happy couples and felt a little lonely that I didn’t have anyone.
“Who feels like watching a movie?” Hunter asked.
“Babe you know I do.” Amee said smiling at him. The rest of us nodded our heads in agreement. I turned on the TV and went to Netflix.
We all decided to watch a funny movie and we ended up watching Hangover 2. We laughed as we watched the actors on the TV screen do crazy things.
Halfway through the movie the TV went out and so did the lights. Well that’s just great, I thought. The living room was pitch dark because we had curtains covering the windows.
“I don’t like the dark.” Charisma said. Her voice was a little shaky.
“I’ll go get some candles.” I said.
“I’ll help you.” Amee said. I felt her hand on my shoulder and we walked to the small closet where we kept all the candles and flashlights.
“Crap, there too high.” I said. I was short so I couldn’t reach high places.
“Girl, I got this.” Amee reached up and got a candle. She handed it to me and reached up to get another one. She stood on her tippy toes straining herself to get it. “Almost got it…” She pulled a little. She pulled harder and brought down boxes. I yelped as the boxes came crashing down.
“You girls alright up there?” Hunter yelled from down stairs.
“Yeah we’re fine.” I yelled back.
“Sorry Faye I didn’t mean to drop everything. I was just trying to get the candles but they were stuck behind these boxes.”
“It’s okay.” We got on our knees and picked up the stuff that had fallen from one of the boxes. Amee suddenly stopped and picked up a box. I couldn’t quite see what it was but it sure got here attention.
“What is it?” I asked her as she ran her fingers over it. She wouldn’t respond to me so I bent forward trying to look at it.
I stopped and my mouth opened in surprise. It was a ouija board. My mom had told me that she had tried it once but never told me that she still had it. After a bit of more silence Amee looked at me.
“We should try it.” As much as I was curious about the board I didn’t want to try it. What if something bad happened?
“No we can’t.”
“Faye, come on don’t be scared. It’s just a board with letters. What harm could it do?” I forgot that when Amee found something to do she would do anything do it.
“No Amee what if something does go wrong?”
“Nothing will go wrong trust me.” Amee said. She got up and ran down the stairs leaving me with the boxes in my hands.
When I got to the living room someone had pulled the curtains opened and the light shined down. My friends were all standing around the box. I wanted to take the box and burn it. I didn’t want to try it at all but from the looks of it I had no other choice.
“Do you think it works?” Charisma asked quietly.
“I don’t know but let’s find out guys.” Amee said
“Amee I don’t think we should.” I said again hoping to change her mind.
“Please guys I’m sure nothing will happen.”
“I’m in.” Hunter said. Amee looked at the rest of us waiting for an answer. We all sighed and nodded our heads.
“Yay! You guys are the best, let’s move the couches.” We all helped moving the couches to one side of the room then we moved the tables too. She took the box and sat down in the middle of the room. She moved her small delicate fingers over the top flap opening it slowly.
“Anybody have a lighter?” I asked. Alekk pulled one out of his pocket. I lit the candles as Hunter closed the curtain shut leaving us with the only light source being the candles.
Amee set everything up as if she already knew how to do it. We watched her frightened. The candlelight flickered behind us casting shadows over the walls. Charisma looked scared out of her mind as she stood off to the side with pen and paper.
“Okay you guys ready?”
We nodded our heads and in unison put our fingers on the small wooden piece. I inhaled and exhaled trying to calm myself down a bit. We moved the planchette around the board for a bit then we stopped in the middle of the board. We all looked at Amee waiting for her to ask something.
“Is anybody there?” Amee asked. I could tell from her voice that she was scared. The planchette didn’t budge at all. We all looked at each other relieved. The planchette suddenly moved to yes. There was shock on all of our face expressions. I wanted to stop this right now but Amee went on going.
“Are you a boy or a girl?” The planchette moved over to the “G” “I” “R” then finally stopping on “L”.
“How did you die?” I wanted to slap Amee for asking that. My mum had told me never to ask that question. The planchette quickly moved over the letters: “M” “U” “R” “D” “E” “R”. Murder. The poor girl was murdered.
“Do you know who murdered you?” We all looked at Amee. She seemed to be very intrigued by all of this. The planchette moved over to no.
“Where did you die?” It moved over some letters but I couldn’t keep up with the spelling. I looked over at Charisma and she was staring at the paper shocked. Suddenly the candles went out and everything went pitch black.
