"Wait, where did you get this number from?"
"It was from this equation here. You just plug this number in and-"
"Wait, where did you get this equation from?"
"It's the equation from two chapters ago."
Pang sighed and sat back in his chair. "I really just don't get it."
Namtarn stood up and put her hand on Pang's shoulder. "It's okay. Let's just try again."
Pang shook his head. "That's okay, Namtarn. It's getting late. You should go to bed."
Namtarn looked at her watch. "I guess you're right. I really wish I could help you. Maybe you could ask Punn? He's really good at maths. Or even Wave?"
Pang scoffed. "As if Wave would help anyone with anything. That guy really has a mind of his own."
Namtarn picked up her bag from the floor. She turned to look at Pang. "I'm just saying. Those two are the best in class one. Just consider it."
Pang nodded. Namtarn left.
Pang knew he should ask for help, but he wasn't sure if Punn was willing. They weren't exactly close. But he figured it was better than asking Wave. That guy didn't need more of an ego boost.
After staring at the ceiling for a while, Pang finally decided to get up and look for Punn. His test was this Friday, and he couldn't afford another failing grade.
As Pang opened his door to leave, he nearly ran into someone. Upon further inspection, he noticed it was Wave, hand poised into a fist, seconds before knocking on Pang's door.
"Wave. Hi. What do you need?" Pang asked.
Wave rolled his eyes. "More like what do you need? Namtarn told me you needed help with your maths homework." Wave had a smirk on his face. The bastard.
That darned Namtarn. So nosy.
"Yeah, I guess. Do you really want to help me?"
Wave crossed his arms and shifted his weight onto his left foot. "It's not like I have anything better to do. Might as well help the idiot with his basic maths."
Pang frowned but didn't argue. He knew Wave was right: he really was an idiot when it comes to numbers. He let Wave into his somewhat-messy room. He didn't mind if it were messy when Namtarn was over. He knew she was used to it. But with Wave, it was different. Wave ignored the mess and immediately sat down at Pang's desk to look over Pang's notes and homework.
"Get over here so I can actually help you," Wave demanded.
Pang sat in the chair Namtarn was in less than half an hour ago. He looked at the mess of numbers and lines on the paper. Wave was writing something down, maybe an equation for the problem. Pang had no clue at this point.
"So to do this problem you need to know this equation." Wave pointed to the equation with a pencil. "These letters represent numbers the problem will give to you. Typically, the problem will give you all the letters except one. Then you solve for the letter that doesn't have a number."
Pang scrunched his eyebrows together in concentration. "But how can you tell which numbers go where?"
Wave glared at Pang. "Are you serious? Do I need to hold your hand through every step?"
Pang flushed in anger and embarrassment. "I don't know what I'm supposed to do! That's why you're here, right? To help me?"
Wave sighed and rubbed his temple. "This is going to be a lot harder than I thought"
