I swallowed the tomato that was currently stuck in my throat.
"Um...hi?" I squeaked.
"Why are you sitting with the art freaks?" Kory snarled. "Come sit at the cool table."
"If you're gonna act like a jerk," I said, standing up. "I think I'll pass. Work on your act and try again tomorrow. Bye, Kory." I raised my hand and shooed him away.
He blinked a couple times, in shock, and walked away.
"Woah, that was amazing." Dani piped.
"Uh, y-yeah that was p-pretty c-cool." a different voice said.
I turned around to see a scrawny teenager, giant glasses perched on the edge of his nose. He carried a giant bag, and two textbooks in his arms.
"Oh, this is Ryder." Alex said, giving a smirk.
"Hey, Ryder. I'm Lana." I held my hand out to be shaken, but Ryder just stood there in shock.
"Y-you're a g-girl talking t-t-to me." he said, his eyes growing wide.
"Hey, I talk to you!" said Dani, obviously offended.
"Besides you, D." Ryder joked, giving a faint laugh.
"I-I'm Ryder A-Adams." he said, scratching the back of his head.
I thought.
Adams?
Adams.......
Kory Adams!
"Is your brother K-" I started, but Ryder cut me off.
"Y-yes, I a-a-am K-Kory Ad-dam's brother-r." he said sighing as he spoke. "E-everyone exp-pects m-me to be c-cool. B-b-but I'm n-not."
"Ryder," I spoke softly. "You are cool. Don't forget that. And if anyone tells you otherwise, you know who to call."
I dug into my pocket and pulled out my phone.
"Here. Put your number in and I'll put mine in yours." I said, my phone in my palm, Ryder's eyes wide. He rubbed his eyes, and looked back up at me.
"I-is there s-s-someone b-behind m-me?" Ryder sniffed and pushed up his glasses.
I rolled my eyes, smiled, and put my phone in his soft hand.
"Do you mind if I put my number in your phone?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
He nodded, setting his bag on the dull picnic table in the cafeteria. Ryder mumbled, rummaging through each pocket of his bag. Finally, he pulled out an iPhone 5s with a Nike™ case covering it.
"It's K-Kory's o-old p-phone." Ryder said, looking down.
I took the phone and entered my number, while he did the same. By the time we both had finished, lunch was nearly over.
"Hey, guys," I spoke up. "I have to leave early to find the rest of my classes. I'll see you later."
"Bye, boo!" Alex said, blowing a kiss.
"Catch ya later, Rose!" Dani yelled, waving. She'd told me earlier that she liked my middle name better than my first name.
"See y-you l-later, L-Lana." Ryder softly spoke, smiling sheepishly.
It's so cute when he does that, I thought, quickly stopping myself.
Me?
And Ryder?
No. Never.
