she wanted him to jump
down. he didn't want to do that.
he was afraid of heights, "i'll just sneak out
the front door." he told her.
she understood this and nodded.
he hung back ready for her to argue that
he should jump, that he should man up and jump
from his window.
but she didn't, she just got herself ready to jump
down herself. "i'll
meet you down there." and then she
was gone.
he crept down the stairs
ever so softly.
and then he
wished he had jumped.
the words he was hearing
his parents scream to
each other
made him want to cry.
his eyes were watery when he came outside, and he desperately
wiped them and slowly jogged up to
nova.
she smiled at him as he made his way
to her and when he reached her her smile softened.
her hand reached up to
his cheek,
she brushed her thumb under his eye.
she pulled back and examined her thumb.
when he went to touch the spot she had just left her presence
his finger came back
to find a wet patch.
he had cried in front of her. and he couldn't stop.
