"joyce it's driving me insane! they're spending entirely too much time together!" hopper said, his hands pulling at the hair on his head. "hopper calm down, i bet you were all over your first girlfriend," she teased, "yeah but i wasn't like them! they're so annoying about it! even when they are met together, they're on the phone and it's like they are in the room right next to me!"
"hopper, just calm down! it's normal, their in a healthy relationship and everything is going good for them. just let them be happy with it, at least mike doesn't use her just for her powers. he loves her for her."
hopper let out a frustrated sigh, "i just feel like she's growing up too fast, you know?"
"i know hopper but you have to let her live her life. she's never had the kind of freedom she has now and if you separate her from mike now, you'll never hear the end of it. you saw what everyone else saw the night el came back, she didn't look at you, me, anyone else. she just looked straight at mike. everyone could see the look on their faces, so don't take that happiness away from them."
hopper frowned, joyce was right. he had to give el the freedom she never had, and even if hopper didn't like it he had to accept that she was growing up, with or without him.
"so there isn't anything i can do? i mean, mike's at the cabin from nine in the morning to like nine at night! twelve hours of them being together! don't you think that's a little much?"
"i mean maybe.. but just talk to them, let them know what you think." joyce said softly as she restocked the shelves in melvalds. "talking doesn't work."
"not ordering, not yelling.. but talking."
"i'll give it a shot but, there's no promises it will work."

mike rode his bike along the road, remembering the exact path to el's house. his feet pedaled fast, summer breeze making his hair fly all over the wind. he threw his bike down on the ground and ran over to the porch.
el was waiting for him on the porch and stood up when she saw him coming down the path to the cabin. mike ran up to her and hugged her tightly. "i missed you," he breathed out, "missed you too." she smiled.
"wanna go inside?" she asked, mike nodded and the two teens ran inside. "so what do you want to do?" he asked, "can you read to me?" el asked hopefully,
"of course," el picked up a book and handed it to him. she cuddled up next to him on her bed, wrapped her arms around him. a slow blush crept onto his cheeks before he opened the book.he read the title out loud, "anne of green gables."
"i'm on chapter IV." she said quietly, "you mean chapter four?" he asked, el flushed and nodded, burying her face into his sleeve. mike flipped to the page and began reading, "it was broad daylight when anne awoke and sat up in bed, staring confusedly at the window through which a flood cherry sunshine was pouring and outside of which something white and feathery waved across the glimpses of the blue sky.."
his voice was so calming and soothing to listen to, el could fall asleep to it. she always loved when he read to her, stopping every so often to ask if she knew what a word meant. sometimes el would stop to ask what one meant and he would answer in a way only she would understand.
"i think he's lovely," said anne reproachfully. "he's so very sympathetic. he didn't mind how much i talked- he seemed to like it. i felt that he was a kindred spirit as soon-"
"what's that mean?" el asked, "what?"
"kindred spirit." she repeated, "oh, um it's like someone who you share a connection with, it's all positive energy and stuff." he explained.
"can kindred spirits fall in love?"
she only knew a number of things about love but despite the little things she knew, el knew it was a feeling that you felt toward someone. the dictionary hopper had explained it as 'an intense feeling of deep affection' but she knew it had to be much more than that."yeah i guess.. i don't know a lot about that kind of thing." he mumbled, "are we kindred spirits?"
"no.." he started, "no?"
"we're more than that," he said nervously, "then what are we?"
"i think.. we're soulmates."
"soulmates?" she asked, "a soulmate is someone who understands you. they share an unconditional lo- feeling. their basically your life partner.. i guess i like to think we'd end up together.. in the future. does that make sense?" he tried to explain it in a way where he wasn't cringing himself. mike knew he loved el, but he felt as if it wasn't the right time to say it. he knew he had to quit being coward someday but for now he would keep that overwhelming feeling for her inside.
el smiled at him, "you think we'd end up together?" she asked, mike's face turned a deep shade of red. "w-well yeah..you just make me so happy and i can't see my future without y-you, so yeah. i do think we'd end up together."
el beamed at mike, "you really mean it?"
"of course." el jumped up from her position next to him and kissed him all over his face. mike laughed and closed his eyes as she peppered the kisses all over his face. eventually, she stopped and mike wrapped her up in his arms and kissed the crown of her head, "i'm tired can we take a nap?" el asked, "mhm.." he muttered already close to sleeping.
they fell asleep happy and content with each other.

hopper muttered something incoherently as he got into his car. when he got home, he just knew that mike would already be there, el's door probably closed all the way. that sneaky son of a bitch, he thought.
hopper couldn't stand it anymore. he just wanted mike to leave his daughter alone, but god knows that won't happen.
he pressed the gas petal harshly and made his car jump forward. he didn't care what joyce was saying, yelling at the kids was the only way to make them listen. he learned that as a child. whatever joyce told him just went in one ear and out the other.
he had to get those kids to listen and he was going to do it his way.
when he got back to the cabin mike's bike was thrown by the front porch, and he seriously considered running it over. but then he sighed and just parked the car where it was at. he got out of the car and opened the front door harshly, expecting to hear music blasting from her room (he knew they did that so he could hear them- whatever they were doing) but he didn't hear anything.
the house was oddly quiet.
he furrowed his eyebrows together, maybe this was part of their plan. maybe they were doing something they shouldn't be doing? the more he thought about it, the more angry he got.
not taking his shoes off he marched over to her door, which was actually opened a crack. weird.
he pushed the door open and saw them sleeping peacefully, arms wrapped around each other and el's head buried in mike's chest.
as long as mike kept her happy, maybe he wasn't so bad after all.
