The stairwell shines like a mountain pool reflecting moonlight in the dark space lined with pipes and electric wires. Slowly the line makes its way step by step around the space until I stand at the head of the ladder well. It's steeper than a flight of stairs but not as steep as a ladder and so narrow only one person can fit between the handrails. Finally, the person below steps forward leaving just enough space for me. I step forward, both hand on the handrails and step down 1 2 3, my elbow lock and feet raise as I slide down the renting ten steps and land with a boom as my boots hit the metal deck below. Moving to my new place in line I notice a dull pain in my ankle. I'm going to have to stop doing this before I really injure myself. Who am I kidding, I'm going to keep sliding until the day I leave this ship.

FYI I was an Aviation Boatswains Mate for three years. Living and working on an aircraft carrier is kinda serial and explaining things can be difficult so writing about the little things of ship life helps me explain the big things.
