"Mei..." Joseph's head throbbed as he groped for his sister with his eyes shut.
"Pa.... Ma...." He called out, hoping to hear familiar voices.
"My head hurts..."Instead, Joseph heard a lady mumbling – he opened his eyes and he saw a middle-aged lady with long braids and dark skin wiping his forehead with a damp cloth. She had wrinkles around her eyes, and she was in a brown dress that reminded Joseph of bear fur. She gasped when she saw Joseph awake.
"Kai!" the lady cried and caressed his cheeks.
"Oh my dear son, mama missed you."He pushed the blanket away and looked around. He was in a rattan hut, there was a claypot kettle on the stove whistling, herbs laid out on newspaper to dry on the ground, chairs and tables made out of bamboo... where was he? He wondered.
He got out of the bed and ran out of the hut. He saw an ocean before his eyes; when he turned around, he saw a humongous jungle behind the hut he ran out of, with a few other rattan houses on the east side. There were children playing hopscotch and their parents sitting and chatting. He thought, maybe he'd meet someone familiar... maybe one of his kindergarten teachers would be there, maybe his friends! Yes, and they'd help him find his parents and sister!
Joseph ran over to them but slowed down when he realized he recognized none of them. One of the kids playing hopscotch pointed at him and yelled,
"hey you! Why do you look so weird?"
The four other kids and three parents who were minding their own business directed their attention towards him. He panicked – all he wanted was his family and to go home. He turned around and ran away, but he met that lady again who called him her son.
"Kai, come here." she opened her arms and crouched to his height.
Joseph stood there frozen; he didn't know what to do. He didn't even know where he was in the first place.
"PAAAAA!!!! MAAAAA!!!!" he burst into tears."MEIIIIIIIII!!!!" he shouted as loud as he could, his voice choked in fear.
"Sweetie..." that lady came over to him and stroked his head.
He pushed her hand away. "who are you? I want to go home!"
"Kai, this is your home! Mama's right here!" she crouched to his height.
He took a good look at her and bawled.
"YOU'RE NOT MY MAMA!!!"A man in black approached them and said to the lady, "he doesn't remember anything, Miss Riva. Don't push him."
He crouched to Joseph's height. "Do you want to go home?"
Joseph nodded, blinking his tears away.
He placed his hand on Joseph's shoulder.
"Child, close your eyes – I'll bring you home."Joseph rubbed his runny nose with the back of his palm and closed his eyes.
