~ Chapter 1 ~

Chloe had intended to open and close her first case following Lucifer's return to hell with her usual speed and precision. It took her months to recover since his departure. In that time, she would either spend time with Trixie or sleep endless nights at Lux. Or alternatively, she would simply drag Trixie to his empty sky-scraping penthouse. When her daughter was present, she suppressed the tears and reminded the 'little urchin', as Lucifer would describe, that he permanently moved away. The thought of 'permanent' brought tears to her eyes and she clutched the gun in her hand and nodded at Det. Espinoza to open the metal door. Chloe didn't know what she desired any more. Upon her return to the precinct she wanted the most challenging case to get her mind off recent events. Yet, the scale of dangerous difficulty now reminded her of Lucifer and well... him. Ella Lopez insisted on accompanying them because she could 'sense' Chloe's discomfort after Lucifer disappeared. The hugs, for once, were welcomed in an abundance. It was as if Ella was holding all of Chloe's broken pieces together.

The heavy door swung open and slammed into the supporting wall. The sound unbearable and Ella released what appeared to be a high-pitched squeal. Glancing around the large factory before stepping carefully entering. "Finally, a light" Chloe exhaled a breath of relief as her heart beat settled to a steady, cautious pace. Thus far they had to rely on small flashlights that added to the already eerie setting of the abandoned warehouse and a functioning light was much appreciated. Sheathing their guns, the three walked around in search of evidence for their investigation.

"Found something!" Ella exclaimed and both detectives rushed over to her.

"Great", Chloe had tried to find enthusiasm on getting a lead, and failed, yet again. Dan and Ella exchanged glanced before continuing, "So... obviously, as we know the object was blunt and here, we have a blunt object and guess what, blood!" Ella motioned towards the splatter on the item.

Dan grunted, "What even is that Ella?"

"To be honest with you I'm not completely sure, but we can probably research the companies' tools, right?"

"Lucifer would've known what it is" Chloe muttered in reply, earning her sympathetic looked from both her partners.

"I can tell you what it is" growled a shallow voice from the entrance to their room making Chloe's blood run cold. Clearly. she wasn't the only one. Ella paled and Dan reached for his gun. "I wouldn't if I were you" replied the white bearded man and motioned to his allies at the door with guns in their hands, loaded and pointing at them. Tom Hanger, their leading suspect stood before them in all his glory as a killer. And it didn't appear that he was finished with his killing spree. "You see, you're too close to the truth for comfort Decker. You and your posse here, die tonight." He stepped further into the room and was followed by a dozen more armed men. The odds weren't great.

"We don't want any trouble Mr. Hanger" Chloe steadily replied and shuffled further to the back door as she spoke, ushering the others with her.

"You see, Decker, you are the trouble" he picked his ear and wiped whatever gunk he produced on his jeans and said simply, "that is why you must die". And the gunmen took their aim.

As if on que a deafening crash sounded through the warehouse and two figures barged through the back door. Amenadiel and Maze had come to their rescue. "I don't think so" Maze announced and immediately threw one of her demon knifes into their mob, earning her a gut-wrenching howl and their full attention. Gun shots were fired as the two beings rushed into the commotion.

"Get behind the desk Chloe!" Dan yelled over and pulled her out of her reverie, to the shelter where Ella and he were already crouched.

"They can handle this right?" Ella screamed with her hands firmly in her ears. Chloe nodded in return with certainty she wished she had. She felt a lot less safe without Lucifer. And although she trusted the angel and demon to fend off hundreds of oncoming bullets it didn't stop her from craving Lucifer's presence. A quick peak confirmed that more than half of the men were injured and rolling on the floor.
